Deze werd meteen een succes met hits als "Greatest Love Of All"," Saving All My Love For You ","How Will I Know" en "All At Once". Wereldwijd meer dan 22 miljoen verkochte exemplaren. In 1987 kwam ze met het album "Whitney" en brak ze met zeven opeenvolgende nummer-n hits een record. Met dit album slaagde Whitney als eerste vrouwelijke artieste erin de Billboard top 100 binnen te komen op nummer 1. Dit album verkocht wereldwijd meer dan 19 miljoen exemplaren. In 1990 komt Whitney's derde album uit. Op dit album staan meer R&B-nummers, waaronder de grote hit "I'm Your Baby Tonight'. De Ballad "All Man That I Need" werd ook een grote hit wereldwijd. Dit album verkocht wereldwijd meer dan 10 miljoen exemplaren. In 1992 speelt ze als actrice in de film "The Bodyguard", met als tegenspeler Kevin Costner. Tevens is ze met het nummer "I Will Always Love You" (een cover van Dolly Parton) weer helemaal terug als zangeres. Het nummer staat wereldwijd wekenlang op de eerste plaats in de hitlijsten. De soundtrack van de film levert haar verder nog de hits "I Have Nothing"," I'm Every Woman" en "Run To You" op. "The Bodyguard" is de best verkochte soundtrack aller tijden en staat in vele landen aan de top van de hitlist. Wereldwijd werden er meer dan 42 miljoen exemplaren verkocht. In 1995 speelt Whitney Houston een hoofdrol in de film "Waiting To Exhale", die het vooral in de Verenigde Staten goed doet. De singles "Exhale" en "Count On Me" werden hits en een enorm succes in de Verenigde Staten. "Exhale(Shoop Shoop) is Whitney's 11de Amerikaanse NR 1 hit. De soundtrack verkocht wereldwijd meer dan 13 miljoen exemplaren. In 1996 speelt ze in de film "The Preacher's Wife", van de soundtrack van de film werden "I Believe In You And Me" en "Step By Step" hits. Op dit album stonden voor het merendeel gospel songs. Hiermee ging Whitney terug naar haar roots, ze trad voor het eerst op voor een publiek als prille tiener in "The New Hope Baptist Church" in Newark (New Jersey). Dit album is het best verkochte gospel album ooit en verkocht werelwijd 6 miljoen exemplaren. In 1998 neemt Whitney weer een studioalbum op dat naar de naam "My Love Is Your Love" luistert. Het titelnummer "My Love Is Your Love" en de nummers: "When You Believe" (duet met Mariah Carey)," If I Told You That","It's Not Right But It's Okay","Heartbreak Hotel" en "I Learned From The Best" werden hits. Het album kwam de Amerikaanse top 100 binnen op NR 9 en verkocht wereldwijd meer dan 3 miljoen exemplaren. In 2003 kwam het album "One Wish: The Holiday Album" uit. Dit kerstalbum werd enkel in de VS uitgebracht. De laatste jaren is Whitney Houston vooral in het nieuws gekomen door problemen met haar echtgenoot Bobby Brown en geruchten (later bevestigd) van drugsgebruik, maar is sinds 2005 afgekickt in het Crossroads Centre op het Carabische eiland Antigua. Deze kliniek werd opgericht door Eric Clapton. Op 14 augustus werd bekend dat ze na veertien jaar wil gaan scheiden van haar man, Bobby Brown. Inmiddels is Whitney samen met haar ontdekker en platenbaas Clive Davis bezig aan haar zevende studioalbum dat in 2008 zal uitkomen. In August 2000, Mojo magazine voted "I Can't Make You Love Me" #8 on its The 100 Greatest Songs Of All Time list. The idea for the song came to Reid while reading an article about a man arrested for getting drunk and shooting at his girlfriend's car. The judge asked him if he had learned anything, to which he replied, "I learned, Your Honor, that you can't make a woman love you if she don't." Reid and Shamblin were both country music songwriters, who according to some accounts originally wrote the song as a fast, bluegrass number. Upon slowing down the tempo considerably, they realized the song gained considerable power. It then made its way to Raitt and ultimately George Michael. It was not until he formed the duo Wham! together with Andrew Ridgeley in 1981 that success came for Michael. The band's first album, Fantastic, was released going to number 1 in the UK, and within a year, they had released their classic debut single, "Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do?)".
