He formed his first professional band around 1916, a six-man string outfit called Waring's Banjazztra. After graduating from college he took the group to Detroit, where it began to attract the attention of the local music crowd. In 1922 he left the engineering program at Penn State to pursue a career as the leader of an eleven member orchestra that soon became one of the 1920s' most popular bands. In 1923 they had their recording career took off when "Sleep" became a hit. In 1925 they followed this with "Collegiate," a huge hit that captured the carefree college atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties. Now one of the nation's most popular bands, the Pennsylvanians appeared on Broadway, starred in an early sound film called Syncopation in 1929, and then became stars on radio in the 1930s. Waring's early repertoire consisted of peppy rhythms, novelties and period vocals. By the 1930s, however, the band had become much smoother and more musical. Waring also began to feature more and more choral music in his performances. Recording: Waring's Pennsylvanians -- Who's Blue Now? (I.Caesar/J.Meyer), Victor 1928 (Less)
Wildwood Flower - Mother Maybelle Carter - A.P. Carter Wildwood Flower - Mother Maybelle Carter - American Classic. Now a Tribute to an American Music (More) Wildwood Flower - Mother Maybelle Carter - American Classic. Now a Tribute to an American Music Legend. Originaly written by A.P. Alvin Pleasant Carter. It is said it was originally sung by Sarah (Sara) Carter and later made popular by Maybelle Carter. The old 1928 f-hole Gibson Guitar she played is reported to be the Most Important instrument in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Both are now Legends. Trivia: This recording (sourced from Ernie Tubb's in Nashville TN) minimally remixed and digitally remastered here for YouTube, is complete with Chords and Lyrics for guitar, etc. Something that is not widely remembered, is that nearly every soldier home from WWII made a bee-line straight to the Music Store to buy a Guitar. The first thing all of them wanted to learn was the Carter Scratch, so they could learn to play "Wildwood Flower" as recorded by Maybelle Carter. ************************ WILDWOOD FLOWER Written by: A. P. Carter Sung By: Mother Maybelle Carter CAPO: 2nd Fret/KEY: E/ START PLAY: D [D] Oh, I'll twine with my mingles and [A7] waving black [D] hair With the roses so red and the [A7] lilies so [D] fair (fare) And the myrtle so [D7] bright with the [G] emerald [D] hue (dew) The pale and the leader and [A7] eyes look like [D] blue. Oh I'll dance, I will sing and my (*laugh - heart) shall be gay I will charm every heart, in his crown (crowd) I (survey) will sway When I woke from my dreaming, my idol was clay All portion of love had all flown away. Oh he taught me to love him and promised to love. And to cherish me over all others above. How my heart is now wond'ring (wandering) no mis'ry (misery) can tell He's left me no warning, no words of farewell. Oh, he taught me to love him and called me his (flow'r - flower - flour) That was blooming to cheer him through life's dreary hour. Oh, I long to see him and regret the dark hour. He's gone and neglected (his) this pale wildwood flower (flow'r - flour). Maybelle Carter "Scratch Technique" (Lead parts picked out on Low Notes, while Rythm is strummed on the High note chords with fingers) ************************ An Earlier Version I'LL TWINE 'MID THE RINGLETS (Maud Irving and J.P. Webster) (1860) I'll twine 'mid the ringlets of my raven black hair. The lilies so pale and the roses so fair. The myrtle so bright with an emeral hue, and the pale aronatus with eyes of bright blue. I'll sing and I'll dance, my laugh shall be gay, I'll cease this wild weeping, drive sorrow away. Tho' my heart is now breaking, he never shall know, that his name made me tremble and my pale cheeks to glow. I'll think of him never, I'll be wildly gay I'll charm ev'ry heart, and the crowd I will sway. I'll live yet to see him regret the dark hour, when he won, then neglected, the frail wildwood flower. He told me he loved me, and promis'd to love Trough ill and misfortune, all others above. Another has won him; ah, misery to tell, he left me in silence, no word of farewell. He taught me to love him, he call'd me his flower. That blossom'd for him all the brighter each hour. But I woke from my dreaming, my idol was clay. My visions of love have all faded away. ************************ TABS: (Will need to be sorted out by ear due to kerning and text format issues.)
