U.S. Immigration Debate 1/2 Aired on June 18, 2007

An army of invaders, drug traffickers and lepers stealing jobs and social security. Led by CNN's Lou Dobbs, the portrayal of immigrants to the US has been harsh.
We look at the bi-partisan immigration bill that's unleashing a tsunami of self-righteous outrage south of the border.
The most contentious provision is the treatment of 12 million U.S. residents who are there illegally. The bill offers them a lengthy and expensive pathway to legalization instantly branded "amnesty" by conservative opponents. It can take fines and fees of up to nine thousand dollars for a family of four and eight years of waiting behind the backlog of those who've applied legally.
We'll try to get behind the race-baiting rhetoric and look at some of the reasons why hundreds of thousands of people in the Americas are headed North. Avi talks to Doug Rivlin of the National Immigration Forum and Laura Carlsen, Director of the Americas Program for the International Relations Center.
IMMIGRATION FACTS:
There are approximately 12,000,000 undocumented workers in the U.S.
60% have been residents for more than 5 years.
500,000 more arrive each year.
Only 5,000 visas are issued for low-skilled workers each year.
