Abba visited Paris on October 18th 1978 to perform 6 songs for Top Club, a daily tv show presented (More) Abba visited Paris on October 18th 1978 to perform 6 songs for Top Club, a daily tv show presented by Guy Lux. This show had high viewing figures as it was screened just before the 8pm news. They changed costumes between each filming session and were interviewed several times by the presenter. The songs were then broadcast over 6 evenings in the following week: Mon 23 - Waterloo, Tues 24 - Fernando, Weds 25 - SOS, Thurs 26 - Knowing Me, Knowing You, Fri 27 - Thank You For The Music, Sat 28 - Money, Money, Money and Thank You For The Music (repeated). On the following day October 19th Abba were due to sing Summer Night City on a Top Club special. But the recording was cancelled due to a technicians strike. During the evening Abba attended a dinner at the famous restaurant Le Grand Vefour in the prescence of Marielle Mathieu. They returned to Stockholm the next day. Fernando was first recorded by Frida in Swedish on her second solo album Frida Ensam (Frida Alone), released in November 1975. This album was an enormous success in Scandinavia, topping the Swedish album charts for 6 weeks and remaining in the charts for 40 weeks. Fernando was released in Swedish by Frida as a single, breaking all Swedish sales records. It stayed at No.1 for 9 consecutive weeks from January 3 1976. Stig realised the song had hit potential beyond Sweden, so Abba recorded their own version. This was released as a single in March 1976. It soon became one of Abba's biggest ever worldwide hits, topping the charts in 12 countries. It stayed at No. 1 in Australia for 14 weeks, equalling the record held there by the Beatles with Hey Jude. This feat was achieved after Abba made their first visit to Australia to record their television special The Best Of Abba. This show also broke all records. It was seen by 54% of Australian viewers, more than watched the 1969 Moon landing. Fernando was not included on the original Arrival album released in October 1976, except in Australia and New Zealand.
