Last flight of "Redhead" Gordon Israel and the Redhead Gordon Israel had gained a great deal of racing experience while (More) Gordon Israel and the Redhead Gordon Israel had gained a great deal of racing experience while helping Benny Howard design and build his stable of winning racing aircraft. Utilizing this experience, Gordon decided to create his own aircraft which, like the majority of the smaller racers, would be powered by a supercharged Menasco C6S of 544 cubic inches. The Menascos could be temperamental engines but they had an extremely low frontal area and could be "tweaked" to pump out a lot more horsepower - albeit with a downturn in reliability. Gordon's comments on the Redhead: "Neither Benny nor myself had any formal college training, I graduated from high school but Benny did not. I took some advanced math courses at Washington University night school. A lot of times I've regretted not taking more, because every once in a while you run into a problem where if you had some smarts you could work it out. It comes harder without having a formal education but if I can't finally grind it out I have some friends that can." "There was a theoretical background for airplane design in those days and we ran a pretty thorough stress analysis on PETE, the first little airplane we built. It was a 9g limit airplane. You just didn't worry about the structure when you were flying it, and the same thing was true of the REDHEAD with the 6 cylinder Menasco. I've still got the original hand written stress calculations I made on it, and although we didn't have full facilities, those, airplanes weren't built by guess and by God. The structures at that time were simple to analyze, welded steel truss fuselages, and using a graphic method you could run a complete stress analysis in very little time. "The biggest problem I had, in stress analysis on the REDHEAD was the fancy butterfly shaped wing with varying spar depths, where figuring the bending moments was a chore. There was an English gal named Barbara Goff, who was a highly theoretical type on stress analysis, and she had developed this graphical method for resolution of shears and moments in tapered spars. I don't know how many sheets of paper I wound up wasting before I finally got the scale on it down to keep me from going, not only off the board, but complete out of the room."' "There were a lot of airplanes in that era that came unglued structurally but the last thing we had to worry about in our planes was the structure." "You've seen so many people hurt beyond a doctor's repair due to structural failures and there were a lot of them in the thirties. People would find an angel, go out and buy a lot of stuff and start building an airplane, with very little consideration for the structure. It backfired on a lot of guys. Poor old Lee Miles, was one. An excellent pilot, he had his plane just come apart on him." "I'll tell you when you had a six cylinder supercharged Menasco in your plane you had enough problems keeping it going without having to worry about the structure." Redhead Construction The fuselage was built from welded steel tubing to give an exceptionally strong and fairly light structure. Around the basic tube fuselage, Gordon added wooden stringers and formers to give the unit its desired shape. The aircraft's large turtledeck was constructed from molded plywood and it also served to cover a small rollover structure located directly behind the pilot's head. The top portion of the fuselage in front and around the cockpit was covered in formed aluminum sheet as was the fuselage tail cone. From the firewall forward, the Menasco was fitted to a tubular engine mount and then wrapped in a tight-fitting aluminum cowl with extensive louvering on the left side while the six exhaust ports protruded from the lower right cowl. Cooling air was supplied via a duct in the hammered aluminum nose bowl. The Menasco was connected to a fixed-pitch metal two-blade propeller. Oddly, there was a lack of a streamlining spinner over the blunt propeller hub. The completed fuselage was 18.5 feet long. The wings also were of standard construction and were built up around sturdy laminated spruce spars with wood ribs. The entire unit was then covered in plywood, sanded down, and then covered in fabric. This undoubtedly created a very strong unit but the designer must have wanted a bit more safety because he added two sets of bracing wires, the top wires were anchored in the fuselage while the lower wires connected to the landing gear. From the landing gear, a single bracing wire extended into the cowl and was fixed to the motor mount. The completed wing spanned 21.5 feet. His best pylon speed was 173.98 mph. However, the mechanics worked wonders on the Menasco and Gordon was able to place third in the Shell Speed Dash at 221.746 mph. In 1934 at Omaha Gordon won the 50 mile free-for-all but damaged the Redhead on landing. It never raced again. (Less)
Giordano plays the Finale from Schumann's sonata op. 14 This is a recording of a (practice) performance with the Swedish-Italian concert pianist Manlio (More) This is a recording of a (practice) performance with the Swedish-Italian concert pianist Manlio Giordano. Homepage: http://www.MySpace.com/ManlioGiordano The present recording constitutes a "sketchy experiment", where the finale was played at full speed after a few days' work on the piece (which had been played several years earlier, as part of the graduation recital at Lund University). This recording (for personal use) was made in Malmö, Sweden (on a poor instrument in a large dining room); the entire sonata was played a few days later as part of a larger program in Luleå, Sweden, January 3rd, 2003. This upload has been made mainly in order to increase the general interest in this rarely performed work. Quote from the review for the performance in Luleå: "One should ask if it is appropriate to keep referring to [Manlio Giordano] as a "talent" or "gifted young musician". Rather, we are dealing here with a maturing artist, whose performances reflect his deep research into the works... In the third movement [of the Schumann sonata], Andante di Clara Wieck, he lets all the melancholy and bitterness of unhappy love pour out of the instrument, and then accomplishes a sudden shift in mood and playfully brings forth the emotional explosion that Schumann has written in the [fourth and final movement] "Prestissimo possibile; passionato"... ...[Giordano] is an excellent interpreter of the works that he chooses to play and he gives them a touch all his own, which makes interesting listening - an artist, who embarked upon his musical journey, once, in [the Arctic North of Sweden]." (Patrik Boström, Norrländska Socialdemokraten, January 4th, 2003.) = = = Other recordings with Giordano have been uploaded as well on this YouTube account, including video selections from a DVD featuring a live concerto performance. Links to three screenshots from that DVD: http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=22962 http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=22961 http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=22929 The full DVD (4 GB, 62 minutes, copyright-free) can be downloaded at http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3732289 A "BitTorrent Client" program is required for the download. Several such programs are available on the Internet free of cost. = = = Some biographic information about Manlio Giordano follows. Giordano finished his studies at Lund University, Sweden, for an M.A. in musical arts at age 20, under the supervision of prof. Michal Wesolowski (heir of Igumnov of the "Russian school" of piano playing), after having gained admission with the highest marks of all applicants to both Lund University and the Royal Conservatory in Stockholm, Sweden. After the several competition rounds that are part of the admission procedure, the 15-year-old Giordano was deemed apt even for post-graduate level of study by the head juror in Stockholm and during his first semester of study in Stockholm, he was publicly named "The most advanced and independent student I have ever taught" by the head professor at the time, prof. Laszlo Simon of Hungary (presently professor of piano at Universität der Künste in Berlin). Subsequently, Giordano studied for Björn Ejdemo (formerly a student of the great Stanislaw Knor) at Piteå School of Music, Sweden, and for legendary prof. Peter Feuchtwanger in London. In 2001, Prof. Feuchtwanger wrote that "Manlio Giordano is one of the most prodigiously gifted pianists I have heard in a long time and I can highly recommend him..." Giordano was born in Rome, Italy, to a father who was a financier and electronics engineer and a mother working for the European Space Agency. He came with his mother to Sweden at an early age, where he grew up. Although noone played a musical instrument among his living relatives in Sweden, he began his formal piano studies already at age three. Giordano started giving live performances at age five and performed his own music on the Swedish national radio at age 10. Giordano's performances have received excellent reviews without exception and he has been awarded several prestigious prizes (including the Rubus Arcticus prize) and scholarships. Giordano has appeared on the Swedish national television and has first-performed contemporary music on the Swedish national radio. He has given performances throughout Scandinavia, as well as in other countries. Giordano is based in Malmö, Sweden, and presently combines freelance work as a solo pianist with extensive studies for multiple academic degrees within medicine (M.D. program) and the natural sciences (theoretical chemistry, engineering mathematics and molecular biology) at Lund University and Lund Institute of Technology. Prior to enrolling in formal study of science, in 2003 - which thus far has resulted in the highest mark for almost every course taken - self-study had been undertaken over several years; thus, already in 1999, Giordano was officially commended by a British senior university lecturer of inorganic chemistry for his research skills, after having participated on special permission, without formal qualifications, in an industrial research project within the field of analytical chemistry. Linguistics has constituted one of Giordano's hobby interests since his earliest teens; thus, after a few months' focused self-study of university-level English, the 14-year-old Giordano scored a test result so high after taking each of the American T.O.E.F.L. tests that a British senior university lecturer of English testified to Giordano's academic maturity in an official letter of recommendation. Giordano is also likely to hold a Swedish record for senior high-school marks, having received no less than 53 A:s; this was also achieved in a condensed time-frame and in four schools in three different cities due to moving around. (No marks lower than A were received at any point.) Giordano will continue to combine his passion for music with participating in the global quest for a better understanding of the molecular biology of human physiology and pathophysiology. In particular, Giordano is interested in the ongoing cross-pollination between traditional medicine and the various technical disciplines, that is slowly but steadily giving birth to an all-new paradigm within the life sciences. In music theory, Giordano's main interest is the exploration of the limitations of musical notation and the ensuing practical and philosophical consequences. Giordano is an active member of numerous academic associations, including one of Sweden's oldest lecture associations where he has held a board position for two years and remains the youngest member. Giordano is currently ready to accept scholarships to cover (possibly dual) PhD studies in both music and either biochemistry, pharmaceutical science or pathology at one of the leading universities of the world. Giordano is further open to suggestions from sponsors, record companies and artist management agencies. Giordano may be contacted via YouTube. = = = You are welcome to visit Manlio Giordano's MySpace account for additional information: http://www.myspace.com/manliogiordano = = = Links to several photographs of Mr Giordano follow. http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=23247 http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=25150 http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=25151 http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=25153 http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=25157 http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=25158 http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=25152 (studio sessions) http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=25154 http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=23284 http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=25155 (miscellaneous) http://www.spimagehost.com/pic.php?u=14221WrUq&i=25156 (Giordano at age 17) (Less)
