******** UPDATE ********
Let's review the past 36,000 comments so we don't have to keep treading the same water:
CLAIM: The song is about L Ron Hubbard (the founder of Scientology).
WildBill: Yes. This is the consensus, and it can be supported by an interview with Danny Carey and other overt references to L Ron Hubbard in the song Aenima. This makes sense because LRH is dead, and this song is intended to be Tool's eulogy for him.
CLAIM: This song is about Bill Hicks.
WildBill: Well...it doesn't make as much sense this way, but you are entitled to your interpretation of the song.
CLAIM: This song is symbolic for any figure or leader who appeals to the weak masses and leads them like sheep (Hitler, Mussolini, any proclaimed messiah, etc).
WildBill: This is certainly a tenable position.
CLAIM: This song is about Jesus.
WildBill: No. While Eulogy may not be about Jesus specifically, the song does reference Jesus' death negatively. Maynard seems to be making a mockery of Christianity by implying that fools get nailed to crosses. If L Ron Hubbard is the next fool martyr, who was the previous one?
Of course, Maynard never mentions Jesus specifically. But if you doubt Maynard's hostility toward Christianity, please refer to Sober (getting drunk on Jesus' blood), Judith from APC (Maynard curses Jesus and his mother's faith), Opiate, Prison Sex, H, Right in Two, or Wings for Marie and it is nothing short of OBVIOUS that Maynard is opposed to Biblical Christianity.
CLAIM: Stick to your instrument and stop telling me how to live my life.
WildBill: Ok, I could do that, but music is dull in the absence of meaningful lyrics. Although I love Tool's music, I don't agree with a lot of their lyrical content. They are fun to analyze, but Eulogy is particularly irreverent so I just want to remind people that ideas have consequences. If anyone disagrees, definitely send me a message. (Less)
