This video shows there's NO EXCUSE why U.S. Army aircrew are not equipped with a slim seat-pack (More) This video shows there's NO EXCUSE why U.S. Army aircrew are not equipped with a slim seat-pack Butler parachute to bail-out in event of being struck by enemy gun or missile fire. http://www.butlerparachutes.com/seatpack.htm After catching fires there's usually time to PULL-UP for at least 500 feet of altitude for bail-out; SOP has to change from trying to go DOWN and crashland in flames (not too "hot" of an idea, pardon the pun) in favor of going UP to help bail-out parachute opening. The Aircrew will need to be armed with short 5.56mm weapons and ready to fight off hostiles upon landing until rescue forces find them. Aproximately 15 minutes into the flight at an altitude of 7,000 feet The left engine developed mechanical problems and was engulfed in flames. The plane started decending as the pilot fought for control and activated the extinguisher on the engine. At approximately 4,500 feet the pilot rang 2 bells to prepare for a crash landing. At about 3,000 ft the engine became engulfed in flames again he rang 3 bells to bail out. Once the doors were open in the rear all 34 persons became members of the Caterpillar Club by jumping with emergency parachutes. All 34 survived and only a few had minor injuries. The 10 recruits from Tampa all went on to Basic training, Special Forces Training and jump school where they all completed there training in 1966-1967 @ Ft. Bragg , N.C. and Ft. Benning, Ga. Thanks to the crew of the Aircraft from the 357th Troop Carrier Squadron and especially to Major Robert C. Coyle for his professionalism and pilot skills during this emergency situation. Without him we would have all died that night. Also thanks to his crew: Capt. Charles B. Dowling, MSGT John A. Sandlin, A2C John B. Schlotman. Also To Colonel Gray for his cool headness in a very tense situation where he stood tall and led his men to safety. *********** As the helicopter flares to airland or goes into a hover for a rappel or fast rope insertion (FRIES), the small bail-out parachutes are unclipped and passed to a spot in the helo so when its time to leave they don't take them with them. http://www.combatreform2.com/escape.htm Kevin Eldridge Bails out of the Super Corsair WW2/Korean war fighter-bomber at the first annual Phoenix Air races. Notice he turns the plane away from the airshow crowd and points the plane at the ground before bailing out. You can bet his butt was getting really hot judging from the intense flames. The Super Corsair exploded upon impact, a sad loss but the Corsair KILLED MORE AMERICAN PILOTS THAN IT EVER DID OF THE ENEMY.
