The term ballroom dance refers to a myriad of partner dances that are enjoyed both socially and competitively all over the world. Technically, the words "ballroom dance" indicate most types of recreational or social dancing in which couples use rhythms, patterns, and choreographed footwork that matches the beat of the music.
The category of ballroom dancing is a rather broad and constantly changing one as new dances or variations of older dances are being added to the mix. Also known as "social dance", ballroom dance encourages social interaction and was at one time an activity reserved for the privileged and the elite.
Ballroom dancing first became fashionable as long ago as the 1400s during the time of the Italian renaissance and eventually made its way throughout Europe and North America.
Now, a few hundred years later, thanks to a renewed interest in partner dancing as well as competitive dance, many people are again becoming involved with ballroom dance as the pastime has regained an unprecedented appeal.
There are two basic types of ballroom dancing; the Smooth/Ballroom style, and a style that is referred to as Latin/Rhythm. Smooth/Ballroom style consists of beautiful, flowing dances including the Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Quickstep, and the Viennese Waltz.
The Latin/Rhythm style of ballroom dancing include energetic dances such as the Mambo/Salsa, the Cha Cha, Rumba, Merengue, and the Paso Doble.
Characterized by graceful rises and falls that create illusions of gliding across the dance floor, the Foxtrot is a rhythmic type of dancing that began in New York by the Vaudeville actor Harry Fox.
There are a few variations of the Foxtrot such as the Roseland Foxtrot, the Quickstep, and the Peabody. Other dances such as the Lindy and the Hustle are also derived from this type of ballroom dance.
Often used as a way of teaching beginning dancers the basics, the Waltz is perhaps one of the most widely recognized forms of dancing. Using 3/4 time, the Waltz originated in Vienna in the early 17th century and gets its name from the German word walzen, which means to roll, glide, or turn.
The Rumba is one of the most popular types of ballroom dancing noted for its mesmerizing rhythms and sensual movements. Ballroom Rumba has many various types of footwork, including steps in both American and International styles of dance. (Less)
