Eleventh flower focus: THE SONGS OF BUDDY G. DESYLVA
--The Birth of the Blues [excerpt]
--Youre an Old Smoothie
--This is My Lucky Day
--Just a Cottage Small (By a Waterfall)
Why put Crickets on the YouTube hearth? Because Connie Stevenss work on HAWAIIAN EYE deserves rediscovery. As Cricket Blake—perky, friendly, dependable, and angelically Barbie-doll beautiful—Connie delivered one of the most winning portrayals of benevolent femininity in television history. Crickets regular episodic Shell Bar singing engagements were like rays of sunlight piercing through the heavily-clouded drama that surrounded them. Her voice—earnest, young, and appealing; her presence—warm, poised, dynamic, gorgeous: Cricket was a woman of many grace notes. If the noblest purpose of art is to uplift the spirit, Connie Stevens gave Cricket Blake the power to do so superlatively. On behalf of a grateful audience of millions—and more personally, in honor of a woman whose work I value tremendously—I choose to braid a video lei with Cricket blossoms. Braiding? I aint hep to that step, but Ill dig it.
