BOLSHOI: LE CORSAIRE -Le Jardin animé PT.2 Special thanks to M. of Moscow for this film. PT.2 OF 2 - The scene 'Le Jardin (More) Special thanks to M. of Moscow for this film. PT.2 OF 2 - The scene 'Le Jardin animé' in Petipa's original design from the Bolshoi Ballet's revival of "Le Corsaire". June 23, 2007. Maria Alexandrova as Medora Marianna Ryzhkina as Gulnare Dances with an *asterisk are Petipa's choreography. Dances without an asterisk are the choreography of Alexei Ratmansky. Unless otherwise noted, all music is by Léo Delibes. 4. Pizzicato (music by Riccardo Drigo. This music was originally used by Petipa as an additional variation for the character Fleur-de-Lys in his 1899 revival of "La Esmeralda") 5. *Intermède 6. *Variation de Medora (this is Adèle Grantzow's original variation from the first staging of 'Le Jardin animé', dating from 1867) 7. *Coda générale For this production of "Le Corsaire", the ballet historian Yuri Burlaka reconstructed 25 of Marius Petipa's dances (which were notated @ the turn of the 20th century in the Stepanov method of choreographic notation) from Marius Petipa's own notes & notations held in the Sergeyev Collection @ Harvard University, & in the Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum in Moscow. The production also includes new choreography by the Bolshoi Ballet's director Alexei Ratmansky. Petipa's original design is magnificent - it is true 'ballet à grand spectacle' in the 19th century tradition, & gives the ballerina ample oppurtunity to prove why she holds the rank of 'Prima'. The corps de ballet is also put to the ultimate test, with complex patterns & refined grace that must always be done in perfect unison. The choreography is such a marvelous masterwork that one wonders why it was ever changed in the first place - modern stagings (such as ABT or the Mariinsky's version) present a version of 'Le Jardin animé' derived from the stagings of the Balletmaster Pyotr Gusev (& likely Vaganova, Sergeyev, & perhaps Lopukhov), with Petipa's choreography being overly simplified. 'Le Jardin animé' was originally created for the ballerina Adèle Grantzow when she danced in Joseph Mazilier's revival of "Le Corsaire" in Paris in 1867. Léo Delibes composed the music for the piece. In 1868 she traveled to St. Petersburg to perform "Le Corsaire" in Petipa's version. Petipa added 'Le Jardin animé' to this production, & expanded it with additional music by Cesare Pugni. Please see my wikipedia article on the history of "Le Corsaire" for a detailed analysis of the ballet's history.
