This coursework won a runner-up prize in the Sony competition for 2nd year students.
The goal of the coursework was to gain an understanding of the PS2 Linux kit's 2D capabilities and implement a pseudo 3D effect. I chose to base my game on 'WonderBoy in Monster World' for the Sega Mega Drive, made by Westone Co Ltd. I implemented parallax scrolling to fulfil the coursework requirement.
The player progresses by moving from left to right across the level. Killing monsters along the way gives them gold to spend on weapon and shield upgrades or on replenishing their health once they reach the shop at the end of the level. The levels are randomly generated each time from a random tileset and increase in size with each new level, adding more monsters.
Personal touches include being able to control the clouds and castle (a cropped version of Magus' castle from Chrono Trigger) on the title screen. :)
All sprites and sounds copyright to Westone Co. Ltd. apart from title screen castle graphic, which is copyright to Square Enix (formerly Square) and the splash screen graphic, which is my own work.
Also note that the player blink rapidly when hit but the framerate on Youtube appears to be too low to register it, hence why he disappears completely at one point. (Less)

I mean, who else would be nuts enough to combine an amazing kid's puppet show and a kickass (but not exactly G rated) Broadway musical? And I'm equally sure that some of you might've thought that even a person as crazy as me would NEVER be crazy enough to make a music video for a kid's show like Johnny and the Sprites using Loud as the Hell you Want from Avenue Q! Well, as true as that might be, I just LOVE to prove people wrong! So, as the ninth addition to the Grotto Q series, diving into the physical relationship of Basil and Ginger, as well as Johnny and Lily, here's WHEN SPRITES MAKE LOVE!!!
I've already given away most of the cast, but here's the whole cast, in order of appearance;
Seymore as the Boy Bad Idea Bear,
Russell as the Girl Bad Idea Bear,
Basil as Princeton,
Ginger as Kate Monster,
Gwen as Gary Coleman,
Lily as Christmas Eve,
Johnny as Brian, and
Root as Trekkie Monster!!
I had originally planned on Root being one of the Bad Idea Bears, but it got too confusing with him as two differnt characters with no separation between them. But I think Seymore and Russel did a good job!
As I have said eight other times, I own nothing in this video. The song belongs to the creators of Avenue Q, and the clips are from Johnny and the Sprites (duh), which belongs to John Tartaglia (again, duh). If anyone is offended by this, I am sorry. And for those of you who have been following the Grotto Q videos, Fantasies Come True will PROBABLY be out before New Year's. Until then, please enjoy, rate, and comment! (Less)
