Burrngupurrngu F/F# yirdaki played by Larry Winiwini The first thing I noticed about this yirdaki was its lightness. That is usually a good thing (More) The first thing I noticed about this yirdaki was its lightness. That is usually a good thing especially if the shape is also exciting. But it wasn't until I looked at the mouthpiece, before I began playing this stick, that I realised quite a bit of attention had been paid by Burrngupurrngu in shaping it. He had deliberately opened up the diameter of the mouthpiece with scrappings with a knife or similar object, and created a funnel effect on the rim so that the lips rest against more wood than would be the case had the mouthpiece opening been left natural.
My first test blow confirmed it: this is a screamer of a yirdaki.
Because of the conical-shaped bore, there is good backpressure which aids in ease of play so that you don't have to huff and puff. In fact, it is surprising what comes out of this yirdaki with even the slightest breath. It has a liveliness and an energy that pulls you in for further exploration and makes it an enjoyable, effortless instrument to play.
But what I really love about this yirdaki is its bass response. Flicks of the tongue create those accented beats that are the hallmark of traditional Yolngu rhythms, and this stick does it particularly well. It has the sort of voice and acoustic response that I hear a lot in ceremonies throughout eastern Arnhem Land. It is a voice that isn't overly compressed and shrill, nor lifeless and flat. A lot of it has to do with the bore and Burrngupurrngu getting it just right with the tree he cut down to make this instrument. The bore dimensions are great, and I mean really great. The bell area is clear and open, the natural work of termites with not a single bit of work done to clean it out or to open it further. From there, it narrows gradually until you reach the mouthpiece, the neck region not being too open or too narrow but just right. Backpressure and power with bass!
The F/F# interval is ideal, the F# overtone having a nice soft edge to it that allows it to be fired rapidly and cleanly.
Despite Burrngupurrngu effecting a small repair on the neck where termites have eaten too close to the surface, I felt this yirdaki was too good to pass up. The repair is almost inconspicuous and does not detract from the appearance nor acoustics. It is still a Masterpiece, a handcrafted, hand-selected yirdaki of prime quality that would appeal to the most hardcore trad head. And in the 12 months we have had this instrument, it has remained stable and retained its stunning acoustics so we're comfortable in releasing it for others to enjoy :-) And at a great discount too for those on a budget, you won't find a better Burrngupurrngu yirdaki at this price anywhere else.
