A fragment of surviving ancient Greek music, which can POSSIBLY be attributed to Homer; the almost legendary ancient Greek Poet himself, writer of the 2700 year old Epic Poems, "The Illiad" and "The Odyssey"!
I heard this captivating fragment of ancient Greek music on the recording "Musique de la Grece Antique"(which is available from Amazon).
It is played here, on a lyre strikingly similar to the ancient Greek Kithara; the large wooden lyre used mainly by the professional musicians of ancient Greece.
The lyre I am playing, is in fact a replica of the ancient Jewish Kinnor; the lyre played by my own Levite ancestors in the Temple of Jerusalem, over 2000 years ago! The similarity between the Kithara and the Kinnor is indeed fascinating...possibly even the result of some exchange of musical ideas between these two ancient cultures???
For another comparison between the Kithara and the Kinnor, please also see the amazing video on Youtube,"Michael Atherton & Melismos #3" :-

In this fantastically amazing video, can be heard an ACTUAL replica of an ancient Greek Kithara!! Isn't all this Internet cyberspace wotsit stuff sometimes just so COOL??;o)
As this fragment of ancient Greek music is so pitifully short, I have tried to arrange a more musically interesting performance of it, by finishing wih a little improvisation on the lyre - demonstrating an interesting lyre-playing technique almost certainly used in antiquity called "string-blocking". This technique entails blocking with the left hand, only the strings which are not required in the melody - this enables rhythm & basic chords to be strummed with a plectrum in the right hand...
This technique can still be heard today! In parts of East Africa, a lyre called the "Begena",is STILL played by some of the local musicians:

According to Ethiopian tradition, Menelik I brought the instrument to Ethiopia from Israel...crucially, the Begena Lyre ALSO has 10 strings - IDENTICAL in number to the 10 camel gut strings of the original, ancient Hebrew Kinnor of King David!!!
Indeed, one of the very earliest illusrations depicting the ancient Jewish Kinnor (on a the tomb painting of Knumhotpe, from c.1892 BC) is almost IDENTICAL to the Begena:

Isn't it AMAZING what you can dig up on the Net??? :o) (Less)
