Personal Journey With Ms. Michelle Kwan, Figure Skating Champion
Interviewer Ms. Lisa Ling*, Journalist, TV Host
(Speaker) Michelle Kwan is the most decorated figure skater in U.S. history. Her skating brilliance and accomplishments have earned her a place among the all-time greats of the sport. For over a decade (1995-2005), Kwan dominated the sport like no other skater in history, winning an unprecedented 43 championships, including five World Championships, eight consecutive and nine overall U.S. National Championships and two Olympic medals. In the nearly 100-year history of U.S. figure skating, no American man or woman has won more world titles, national titles or Olympic medals. In 2006, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appointed Kwan as the first American Public Diplomacy Envoy. In this capacity she travels the world and meets with young people to speak about leadership and to engage them in dialogue on social and educational issues.
(Interviewer) Lisa Ling is a special correspondent for the "Oprah Winfrey Show" and the National Geographic Channel. Ling has been sent to cover the Lord's Resistance Army and the crisis of AIDS orphans in Uganda, bride burning in India and gang rape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ling was the first woman to host National Geographic's flagship "Explorer" series. Prior to traveling the globe for "Explorer," Ling was known for revealing her "view" of the world to millions of Americans as co-host of Barbara Walters' hit daytime talk show, "The View." Ling's work continues off-camera: she serves as a contributing editor for USA Weekend, and has produced eight documentaries for PBS. She also co-authored a National Geographic book entitled, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride: Rituals of Womanhood. (Less)
