Narrator: The two parties continued fighting until both sides were weary. Peace was finally made between the two sides. Cortes continued his march towards the golden city of the Aztecs, but was faced with many hardships. The journey took many months, and led the expedition through treacherous and foreign lands. Along the journey they learnt about the cruelty of the Aztecs through the area's other indigenous peoples. Many of these tribes wholeheartedly agreed to join the expedition.
Narrator: The Spaniards finally arrived in the capital city of Tenochtitlan.
(after Cortes says "What the...")
Narrator: Cortes was lead to the ruler of the Aztecs, Montezuma, from who learned that Quetzalcoatl was the God of the weather for the Aztecs. Quetzalcoatl was a cross between a serpent and a bird.
(after Cortes talking to himself again)
Narrator: Relations between Montezuma and Cortes began to weaken. Soon, hostility emerged. Cortes became worried, and so he locked Montezuma in his Palace. Soon, Cortes heard that Velazquez had sent out another expedition to arrest him, for going against his wishes...

Narrator: Cortes left Tenochtitlan and attacked Velázquez's expedition, convincing the survivors to join him and switch allegiances. Upon his return to the Aztec city, Cortes learned that one of his men had started a massacre in a temple triggering rebellion. The Spaniards managed to escape the city and flee to the Tlaxcalans while under heavy attack. They returned again with reinforcements.

Narrator: When Cortés met with Charles V in Spain, Charles made him marques del Valle de Oaxaca and gave him large amounts of land. In 1530, Cortés returned to Mexico with a rich new wife. He built a new house for himself at Cuernavaca. He began life as a prosperous farmer. He was the most powerful man in the new world.
Cortes could not live a quiet life for long. He sent expedition after expedition to discover new lands, but all of them failed in part due to weather, mutiny, and ship wrecks. |The losses from these expeditions got him into debt. Hernando Cortes finally passed away on December 2, 1547 in bed, an old, poor, and sick man. Cortes was a legendary commander, fighter, and explorer. His expeditions helped to fuel further exploration in the New World and strengthen links between people of all kinds. (Less)
