John Searle and Alan Wallace video: http://www.psych.northwestern.edu/psych/people/faculty/pa...
I talk about my reaction to his insistence that consciousness is caused by the brain. I bring up Alan Wallace, who believes that neuroscience has only proven a correlation between brain and mind. The true nature of the relationship has yet to be discovered, all that we know is that they are related in some way. To say that the brain causes experience, or produces consciousness, is to leap to an assumption based on nothing empirical, but rather on certain historically Western philosophical dogmas. Wallace brings an Eastern perspective into the discussion in order to reveal these hidden dogmas by way of a comparison. The Buddhist tradition has been studying the phenomenal nature of consciousness (ie, the 1st person rather than the 3rd person side of it) for thousands of years, and what it has discovered is that consciousness is all pervasive. It is not something located in the head, but something spread throughout the cosmos. Reality is non-dual, that is the essential message of Buddhist science (and I call it science because it is based on an empirical examination of the phenomenon of consciousness). But any examination of consciousness immediately becomes a transformation of consciousness, and so part of the technique of Buddhist phenomenology is to open up the mind and allow it to develop toward wholeness or integration, to realization of the non-dual.
