The domestic and the everyday become turbid stupor in Duncan's' work. 4 sinks splashed and abused with paint rise vertically, fixed to the wall at regular intervals, their ordinary function subverted to a 3-meter tall, kinetic sculpture. A perpetual flow of dark bubbly liquid escapes broken plastic tubes, a turbulent D.I.Y. project, or a sardonic comment on consumerism?
'Ultra mega pearls' takes the seductive nature of advertising, the throw-away culture of splendour and impact and reverses it, transforming it into the aesthetically imperfect grotesque, questioning our perception of consumption, presenting us with the reality beyond the desired object.
What is immediately apparent is the fountain-like cyclic nature of the system, its' perpetual unfailing mechanism, which is nevertheless a deficient one, where the flow of water will be naturally unpredictable; yet it is a continuous digestion and excretion of the same dark matter. This unstoppable flow of liquid echoes our desire for commodities, without which the entire system of consumption would fail; one basin has to feed the next in order for the structure to function.
The incessant flow of liquid serves as yet another negative allegory; it intrinsically references the concept of the Fountain of Life, the Christian symbol of rejuvenation, the celebration of existence, whereby it is this very system, which will give us the illusion of immortality and Godliness. Marx once wrote: 'Accumulate, Accumulate. That is Moses and the Prophets'.
