Princess Galyani Vadhana Bangkok, January 2, B.E. 2551, (2008), Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister (More) Bangkok, January 2, B.E. 2551, (2008), Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of His Majesty the King of Thailand, has died. She was 84.
The Bureau of the Royal Household announced early morning today that H.R.H. Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra has passed away at 02.54 January 2, 2008. His Majesty King Bhumibold Adulyadej has commanded the Buddhist funeral rite for the late Princess, the highest honour, to be taken place at Dusit Throne Hall in the Grand Palace. A 100-day court morning has also been observed.
Princess Galyani Vadhana, who is the elder sister to two of Thailand's Sovereign Monarchs, was born to Their Royal Highnesses Prince and Princess of Songkla in post-WWI England and received an early education in Switzerland. Originally trained as a chemist, she was fluent in French, German and English. Living in Bangkok, she was a pioneering university lecturer in French Language and Literature in which she excelled as one of the most respected scholars in the country. She was also universally admired for her natural simplicity and international high-mindedness. In 2005, a leading Thai newspaper proclaimed her as "Thailand's Royal Matriarch of International Wisdom-based".
In 2007, on her 84th birthday, a special Buddhist Dana Ceremony was organised in her honour at both the Royal Chapel of the Emerald Buddha and later at the Government House in Bangkok.
H.R.H. Princess Galyani Vadhana was Royal Patron for a great number of organisations nationwide, including Dhamma Society's World Tipiṭaka Project. In 2002, she graciously became Patron to the First International Tipiṭaka Discourse which was organised in her presence at the International Tipiṭaka Hall, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.
In 2004, as the Grand-daughter of King Chulachomklao of Siam and the Matriarch of the Royal Family, she accepted to become the first Honorary President of Tipiṭaka Presentation to Leading Institutions Worldwide, thereby following the international presentation of the King's Tipiṭaka in Siam-script edition as a royal gift by her Grand-father over a century ago. In 2005, the Princess inaugurated the World Tipiṭaka Edition in Colombo, Sri Lanka, by presenting the first 40-volume Tipiṭaka --the world's first complete edition in Roman script-- to the Sri Lankan President on March 6, 2005. That inauguration day --March 6th-- has since been declared by the President of Sri Lanka as the World Tipiṭaka Day in Sri Lanka.
Since then special sets of the World Tipiṭaka in Roman Script have been presented annually as Royal Gifts of Wisdom and Peace from Thailand to leading international institutions of the world. These institutes include the Constitution Court of Thailand (2005), Carolina Ridiviva Library (2005), the Parliament of Sri Lanka (2006), Sweden's Lund University, Japan Theravada Buddhist Association (2007), Maha Bodhi Society of India (2007), the International Court of Justice at the Hague (2007), and the Supreme Court of Thailand (2007).
In 2007, by her gracious permission, a Tipiṭaka Endowment Fund which Princess Galyani Vadhana initiated in 2005, was specially renamed as "Princess Galyani Tipiṭaka Endownment Fund". This Fund will continue to support the printing and propagation of the World Tipiṭaka in memory of the late Royal Matriarch, the highly esteemed and the most beloved Princess in the History of the World Tipiṭaka.
May the vision and the meritorious work of the late Princess ever prosper and long endure ! (Less)
