OutRun2 (US XBox): Daytona USA 2 Stage (Hi Quality)
HIGHER QUALITY SETTING RECOMMENDED The XBox port of OutRun2 contained some surprising unlockable (More) HIGHER QUALITY SETTING RECOMMENDED The XBox port of OutRun2 contained some surprising unlockable content. Among them are two bonus courses which will strike a familiar chord with Sega arcade racing gurus. Here is one of them, a port of the Challenge course found in Daytona USA 2: Power Edition. Back in the day, if you were the owner of a Sega system, no doubt when they released something in the arcades, there was a strong chance you'd soon be able to own it to play at home whenever you pleased. Daytona USA 2 was among the few titles at the time that would never see a home release despite its popularity and demand, the sequel to highest grossing arcade game of all time, Daytona USA, although it was nowhere near as popular as its predecessor. The Challenge course found in the "Power Edition" version consisted of the Advanced, Expert and Beginner tracks combined in one. The beginner track found in "Power Edition" was a NASCAR-themed racetrack - replacing the forest dome with mountains and waterfalls of the original "Battle on the Edge" course - in an attempt to make the game feel more authentic and realistic. Last I checked, it wasn't well received. "Power Edition" itself wasn't well received. Unfortunately for fans, this is the closest thing we'll get to a home port of Daytona 2. The fact that this course is in this game probably confirms Daytona USA 2 will stay only in the arcades until we can download Model 3 emulators. If I were Sega I'd release a collection of Model 2 and Model 3 games, a "Best of" thing. Although I enjoyed the Dreamcast re-release of the original Daytona USA, I still wonder to this day why we didn't get Battle on the Edge instead. Oh, and here's the fun thing. The Japanese version of the course differs significantly than this version. Sumo Digital was responsible for the most of the development for the US/EU home port, then SOJ took it upon themselves to make alterations to the Japanese version. For this course, it resembles the arcade more. I feel ripped. First that, adjustments to the other bonus course, Holly got a new design, and with Clarissa we got to see her with... Okay, I'd better shut up. But if you want to see the difference, check out this vid of the Japanese version of the course: watch?v=wIba1iQDaTg Other than that, if you don't pay attention to the racing and look at the course design itself, you can really see the incredible attention to detail Sega put into the game. That was one of the reasons I fell in love with Sega's arcades. They added in so much detail to everything, and with their racing titles, you weren't just racing, you were also enjoying some amazing scenery. I admire the vision and detail they put into their work. --- Now for video-related stuff. First off, don't bother with comments saying how much I suck or messed up. I know. I forgot that OR2 is less friendly with shift-drifting than OR2SP/2006, so I had to use the brakes more than I wanted to, and I sometimes forgot which gear I was in. Demonstration purposes only, people. And no one cares if you're better. Actually just don't bother making stupid comments. I take pleasure in deleting them =D In case you're wondering, the game didn't have the soundtrack to Daytona 2 in this course. I added the songs from the OST in editing. Don't ask for the songs or the soundtrack. And for owners of OutRun 2006, this course was only available for the original OutRun2 for XBox. Oh, and if anyone can figure out why I chose a red Ferrari F355 Spider, you get a cookie. (Less)
Eric Martin: Sons of Angels - Full Version (Daytona USA CCE)
I own nothing! And keep asshole/flaming comments non-existent, m'kay? There's a difference (More) I own nothing! And keep asshole/flaming comments non-existent, m'kay? There's a difference between "It's not my kind of music" and "this sucks". Not needed and will be removed. The full version of the opening song to Daytona USA: Champion Circuit Edition, featuring Mr. Big's one and only Eric Martin on vocals and Jun Senoue on guitar, a name that should be all too familiar with Sega music fans. History lesson time! The Sega Saturn port of the arcade game Daytona USA, the highest grossing arcade game of all time, wasn't exactly well received when it launched, mainly due to the fact it was rushed for the Saturn's launch date. Weak frame rate, massive clipping. But for audiences outside Japan, there was something else that irked many so-called gamers. The soundtrack; vocal tunes sung one of Sega's most popular musicians and singers, Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, with lyrics like "Blue, Blue Skies!" and "Daytona! Let's Go Away!". For some, there was something irresistibly catchy and unique about it. Now while Mitsuyoshi is seen as a star in Japan, I couldn't tell you the soundtrack was well-received in the West. For the most part, everyone I knew hated it and magazine publications mocked it. Seemed only hardcore Sega junkies like me loved it. Sega would later release an enhanced port, Daytona USA: Champion Circuit Edition and fix the graphics issues in the earlier version, but the soundtrack was also replaced with instrumental remixes, possibly in response to the criticism the original soundtrack had in the US and Europe. But one of the first things you noticed when booting up this game was someone screaming into the microphone, similar to that of an 80's rock band. Nostalgic! It's none other than Eric Martin of Mr. Big fame, but hey, he's a hit over there in Japan, too. Sega of Japan would include the original soundtrack with Mitsuyoshi's vocals in the Japanese release of Circuit Edition along with the new tracks, and like many game soundtracks in that country, this game would have an official soundtrack release, featuring the full uncut versions of the songs featuring Eric Martin, "Sons of Angels" and "The American Dream". Non-vocal versions of those songs would also appear on the CD. Although some gamers and critics were happy the "cheesy" vocals of the original were gone, some diehard Daytona nuts weren't too pleased with the new songs featuring Eric Martin. You've got those who think 80's rock sucks, then you've got those who much prefer the original vocal songs, even though you were never actually playing when these songs were heard. Sons of Angels was played only in the opening demo, and The American Dream was played only when you were watching a replay after a race. I've always seen Circuit Edition as a remix, so the game and soundtrack never really bothered me. So when I first heard this song, I actually didn't mind. I thought it was fitting and pretty awesome. Sega would use a similar rock style for the soundtrack of the true Daytona sequel, Daytona USA 2: Battle on the Edge, in which the musical talents of the band Winger were used. Contrary to popular belief, they didn't create the game's soundtrack, but lent their talent to the songs in that game. Believe it or not I was among the first people to grab this song off of Napster when it first hit way, way way back then. Ancient history. Everyone else had the minute-long demo ripped from the game, then I stumbled what I hoped was the full version of Sons of Angels at 4:28. Sure enough. The person I grabbed it from was very secretive about it and I don't think was too happy I stalked his account for these tracks (including the Daytona USA Medley). So once I renamed it, the traffic was through the roof and I had all kinds of people asking me how I even found the song. Daytona fans who liked the songs, and a ton of Mr. Big fanatics who didn't even know a full version was made. Those were good times. History lesson over. Dismissed! Since this is the game's opening song, I included clips of all the opening demos from the game to accompany it. And I featured the original Hornet car because as far as I'm concerned, there is only one true Hornet High Class Since 1992. That last line always cracks me up, though. "How does it feel to be a winner? Descendant from heaven!" (Less)
