Death and the Maiden (German: Der Tod und das Mädchen) composed by Franz Schubert, 1817.
"The technical vocabulary of the music is taken from opera" writes Christoph Wolff in his analysis of this song. The first stanza "follows in it's design the traditional pattern of an accompagnato recititive", and the voice of death in the second utilizes "the oracle topos of eighteenth-centrury opera seria".
derived from a poem (very popular in it's day) written by Matthias Claudius (first published 1775)--
Das Mädchen:
Vorüber! Ach, vorüber!
Geh, wilder Knochenmann!
Ich bin noch jung, geh Lieber!
Und rühre mich nicht an.
Der Tod:
Gib deine Hand, du schön und zart Gebild!
Bin Freund, und komme nicht, zu strafen.
Sei gutes Muts! ich bin nicht wild,
Sollst sanft in meinen Armen schlafen!
The Maiden:
Pass by! Oh, pass by!
Go away, fierce man of bone!
I am still young, go my dear!
And do not touch me.
Death:
Give me your hand, you beautiful and delicate form!
I am a friend, and am not come to punish.
Be of good cheer! I am not savage,
You will sleep softly in my arms! (Less)
