Soundgarden se forme en 1984 sous l'impulsion de Chris Cornell (batterie et chant) et de Hiro (More) Soundgarden se forme en 1984 sous l'impulsion de Chris Cornell (batterie et chant) et de Hiro Yamamoto (basse). Ils sont rejoints un peu plus tard par Kim Thayil (guitare), un ami de Yamamoto qu'il avait connu lorsqu'il habitait encore l'Illinois. Le nom du groupe tire son origine d'une sculpture, The Sound Garden, exposée près du Magnuson Park non loin de Seattle. Cette sculpture est composée d'une multitude de tubes et de girouettes qui produisent des sons envoutants lorsque le vent souffle. <br /> <br />Aux premières heures, Cornell assume à la fois la batterie et le chant, mais très vite le groupe cherche un batteur afin que Cornell puisse se concentrer sur le chant. C'est ainsi que Scott Sundquist rejoint le groupe. Deux titres sont enregistrés et édités sur la compilation Deep Six chez C/Z Records, contenant également des titres de Green River, Skin Yard et The Melvins. <br /> <br />En 1986, Sundquist quitte le groupe et c'est Matt Cameron, le batteur de Skin Yard qui prend sa place. Soundgarden signe un contrat le liant au label Sub Pop. Deux maxis (EPs) sont enregistrés: Screaming Life en 1987 et Fopp en 1988. Ils seront réédités en 1990 sous la forme d'une compilation Screaming Life/Fopp. <br /> <br />Les gros labels s'intéressent de plus en plus à ce groupe qui monte, mais c'est pour SST Records qu'il enregistreront leur premier album Ultramega OK en 1988, album qui leur vaut une nomination aux Grammy Awards. En 1989, Soundgarden sort son premier album pour la major A&M Records, intitulé Louder Than Love. Yamamoto abandonne le groupe pour poursuivre ses études après la sortie de l'album. Jason Everman, ancien de Nirvana, le remplacera un temps mais c'est Ben Shepherd qui héritera finalement de la basse. <br /> <br />C'est donc une nouvelle formation qui s'attaque à l'enregistrement du troisième opus, Badmotorfinger courant 1991. L'album connaît un franc succés mais est éclipsé par le raz-de-marée Nevermind qui emporte tout sur son passage et propulse la scène grunge de Seattle en première ligne. Le succès du mouvement grunge permet à certains titres de Soundgarden de toucher un public plus large, ainsi Outshined et Rusty Cage réussissent à percer sur les radios alternatives et même sur MTV. Le groupe entame une tournée conjointe avec Guns N' Roses pour promouvoir l'album et en profite pour tourner une vidéo live Motorvision qui sera commercialisée plus tard. Soundgarden participe également à la tournée Lollapalooza en 1992 où il partage l'affiche avec les Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam et Ministry entre autres. <br /> <br />Le groupe fait une apparition dans le film Singles où il interprète Birth Ritual. La chanson figure sur la bande originale du film tout comme une chanson que Chris Cornell interprète en solo, Seasons. Le film contient également un clip de la version démo de Spoonman, titre inédit qui figurera sur le futur album Superunknown en 1994. <br /> <br />Superunknown consacre définitivement le groupe auprès du grand public. Les titres Black Hole Sun, Spoonman, The Day I Try to Live et Fell on Black Days remportent des succès mérités. L'album mêle habilement la créativité de ses prédécesseurs et un son plus lisse, mieux adapté à la diffusion radio. Les textes s'y font assez lugubres évoquant tour à tour la toxicomanie, le suicide et la dépression. De nombreuses chansons comportent des sonorités orientales, en particulier Fell on Black Days et Half. <br /> <br />Soundgarden produit lui-même ce qui sera son dernier album Down on the Upside. L'album est sensiblement plus léger que les précédents, ce que le groupe explique alors par une volonté d'explorer et de s'ouvrir à d'autres sons. Trois singles seront extraits de l'album: Pretty Noose, Blow Up the Outside World et Burden in My Hand. Néanmoins des tensions apparaissent au sein du groupe lors de l'enregistrement. Thayil reproche vertement à Cornell de vouloir abandonner les lourds riffs de guitare, devenus la marque de fabrique du groupe. Malgrè de bonnes critiques, l'album ne parvient pas à atteindre les ventes de Superunknown. <br /> <br />Durant la tournée promotionnelle qui suit, le climat empire au sein du groupe. Lors de la dernière représentation, à Honolulu en février 1997, suite à des problèmes techniques Shepherd jette sa basse de rage et quitte la scène. Cornell devra finir le concert en solo et a capella. Le 9 avril 1997, Soundgarden annonce sa séparation. Une compilation de ses meilleurs titres, A-Sides sort à l'automne suivant. <br /> <br />Cornell enregistrera un album solo en 1999, Euphoria Morning, puis rejoindra les anciens musiciens de Rage Against the Machine pour former Audioslave. Cameron se consacrera à son projet parallèle Wellwater Conspiracy et rejoindra Pearl Jam sur leur tournée de 1998 (Yield Tour) avant d'intégrer définitivement la formation d'Eddie Vedder. Thayil se produisit lors d'un concert anti-OMC lors du sommet de l'OMC à Seattle en 1999. Il était accompagné sur scène par Jello Biafra (ex-chanteur des Dead Kennedys), Krist Novoselic (ex-bassiste de Nirvana) et de la batteuse Gina Mainwal. Thayil participa également en 2001 à l'enregistrement de l'album 999 Levels of Undo de Steve Fisk, ainsi qu'au projet PROBOT de Dave Grohl en 2004.
