Berkley Springs (David Essig, arr. by Don Ross) Don Ross's arrangement of this tune composed by David Essig. It reminds to "sheebag and (More) Don Ross's arrangement of this tune composed by David Essig. It reminds to "sheebag and Sheemore" (or something like that) but it has a nice groovy switch at the third section. Another thing is to play it well... but its an honnest try, believe me! I hope you enjoy. Btw, the tuning is , from low to high: FACFCF (!)
And its "BerklEy Springs" not "Birkly"-Typical me....sorry for that.
P.S. This video is dedicated to my sister Bernadette, who has her 50th birthday the 24th of this month! Gelukkige verjaardag, Baartje!!!
MESSAGE FROM DAVID ESSIG:
Greetings from Canada - this is David Essig checking in. I'm the guy who wrote "Berkley Springs," and I am flattered and amazed by all of your interest and enthusiasm for the piece. Thank you all very much!!
I wrote the piece to honour the memory of my Mother, Doris Hinkins, who came from the small town of Berkley Springs, West Virginia. I originally wrote it in DADGAD and recorded it that way on the first album I issued as a CD in 1988: Morning Calm. That's where Don Ross first encountered it I believe. He may have also heard me play it live, since we used to do some gigs together back in Ontario and at some Canadian festivals.
Don transposed the piece into F tuning which enables him to play some interesting chord inversions. He also added a chord to the piece that's not in the original, but which I've now incorporated into my version as a tribute back to Don.
It's been recorded a bunch of times here in Canada and I've most recently recorded it on my latest CD release: Presbyterian Guitar. For this new version, we did as a trio on three weissenborns: Doug Cox, Steve Dawson and me, all playing it together. It's very beautiful and if you'd like a copy you can order it directly from me at essig@telus.net
Please feel free to check out my website: www.davidessig.com and I look forward to hearing from you!
Thanks again for your wonderful versions of the tune!

Me again: Its rather nice that a composer encourages an amateur like me rather than telling me I am infringing copyright.
The kind of comment that makes a difference.
Many thanks, David, and my deepest respect.
