Repost- Down on the Flood Plain - Original Song I posted this months back, and thought I'd post it again so that my newer friends could see it. (More) I posted this months back, and thought I'd post it again so that my newer friends could see it. It's a song I wrote many years ago after a dream, at a time when some very bad flooding was occurring in the American midwest. The dream took me right to the edge of an explosive emotional expression... A ferocious repressive reflex kicked in and forcefully woke me from the dream... I immediately got up and wrote this song as a kind of a protest against the destructive emotional repression that's demanded of men in our society.
I played or programmed all the instruments. The flood video footage was found at the internet archive. i think the flooding represented there occurred in Pittsburgh..
I hope you like it.
Paul
Down on the Flood Plain
by Paul Sonnenberg
Well, a good man is a strong man
And a strong man is a stone
We were born here, bathed in hot tears
Told to strike out on our own
And you ask me why
Every tear we've ever cried
Is a pearl of price that buys us only shame
Well, what can't be bought
Are the years that we have lost
Losing lifeblood in the staking of our claim
Down on the flood plain.
When I hear the sound of thunder
And feel the lightning charge the air
Well, I cannot help but wonder
Will the levy hold this year?
And you ask me why
In the cradle of the night
Do I waken with a start and bate my breath
Just a foolish dream of a rushing stream
With a liberty somehow akin to death.
Chorus:
Somewhere there's a place where the rivers cut deep
And the wildness of the raging torrent flows
But the tears of a man are a river early dammed
For the working (taking) of the good land down below
Below the flood plain
Down on the flood plain.
We chide women for their weakness
And we hate them for their strength
And we envy them the weeping
We must avoid at any length
And you ask me why
When the tears begin to fly
Do I cover up and head for higher ground
Well, rain's heaven sent
And may be your element
But I fear the sky could soon come tumbling down
Here on the flood plain
Somewhere there's a place where the rivers cut deep
And the wildness of the raging torrent flows
But the flood of grief rages strong beyond belief
And I fear one day the banks will overflow
Here on the flood plain. (Less)
