The 100 Meter Run - used to motivate and measure Taking a run now and then can be a key activity that motivates us to do more regular indoor (More) Taking a run now and then can be a key activity that motivates us to do more regular indoor exercise. Running is a real, meaningful, enjoyable outdoor activity which catches the imagination. So when we get a real charge out of running faster, it is easier to work hard at regular indoor exercise, to improve our times. Begin by listening to your doctor. Your doctor knows more about your needs than I do (I do hope you are able to agree with me on that). You may need a special program before attempting to run. In my case, I had weak knees, so it took 5 years of gradual improvement (combining diet and fairly brief pain free exercise) before I was able to run reasonably well. But it was a major boost to discover that I can now run far better than I could 20 years ago. So, especially for those of us who are getting older, running can become an important part of a program which helps improve our health and well being. Running can also be an enjoyable way to measure our fitness, to see how our efforts have created important improvements. As we set our goals, it is nice to be aware of how others do. Elite runners can do 100 meters in under 10 seconds. Also, at the Edmonton 2004 World Masters Games, Men in the under 65 years age group ran the 100 meter dash in about 13 seconds, men under 75 years ran it in about 15 seconds, and men under 85 in about 20 seconds.
