Coma Waltz, by John Osburn Performed by Melody Boyd on violin, Ming Yuan Low (More) Performed by Melody Boyd on violin, Ming Yuan Low on piano, and myself on viola.
All performers and writer were students of Texas Woman's University at time of video. John's a music education major with a principle in percussion but pretty much a mastermind at anything he does, musically or otherwise. You may have seen him in a dance production or the opera or film club, he's pretty much all over the place.
Melody was a music therapy major with a principle in guitar when this was filmed, but I believe she's planning to switch to violin. She's also a really accomplished singer songwriter with some great work under her belt. She really does have one amazing voice and some mad guitar skills. As a music therapy major, she's also more than proficient on piano, autoharp, and percussion basics.
I'm a psych major right now with my principle in viola, though I have also played violin, piano, and guitar for years with violin actually being my first instrument. As a former music therapy major I'm considerably less than proficient in autoharp, voice, and percussion basics.
John wrote this and I personally think it's a pretty bad ass piece of composing. We performed it a few times, but this is the one he taped. It was at his Junior Recital in Margo Jones Performance Hall. I'm still really glad he asked us to play it and had a ton of fun learning it.
The idea behind the song is that it's part of a live soundtrack to a silent movie. The movie and rest of the soundtrack have yet to come into creation, so this is like a small sample of a larger creation to come. The end result is supposed to be this pretty bitchin' silent movie that tours around with live performers (me if I'm lucky) doing the music to it. Very Phantom of The Opera. As you can tell by the title, this is part of one of the characters' coma. Trippy stuff. John and I deduced it sounds most like a cross between the soundtracks of The Godfather and Nightmare Before Christmas.
I will note, for some reason when uploading it, the audio is kind of wonky in the first half from the uploading and it fucks with pitches a little, so we randomly sound flat and sharp and all sorts of random dissonant until it stabilizes out. You can tell when that happens because we stop sounding crappy and everything gets a little smoother, so pretend it sounded like that from the beginning until I can re-upload it so it sounds pretty.
Drop me a line if you want a copy of the video or an Mp3 of the audio. John, Ming and Melody are pretty much guaranteed to be famous someday, so it could be a collector's item. (Less)
