France's foreign minister is warning that the world should prepare for war if Iran obtains nuclear weapons. Bernard Kouchner made the announcement yesterday, also saying that European leaders were considering their own economic sanctions against the Islamic country. Negotiations and two sets of U.N. Security Council sanctions have failed to persuade Iran to stop its uranium enrichment program. That country insists its atomic activities only produce energy and not weapons.
President Bush has nominated a former federal judge to head the U.S. Justice Department. Michael Mukasey would replace former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales if confirmed by the Senate. Analysts say Bush's decision to name Mukasey shows he's backing away from a fight with Senate Democrats. Mukasey was recommended as an ideal attorney general by New York Democratic Senator Charles Schumer, who has led the Senate Judiciary Committee's probe of Gonzales.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will unveil a health care reform plan today that will require all Americans to have health insurance. The plan would cost the federal government about $110 billion. Under the initiative, federal subsidies would be provided for those who are not able to afford insurance. Large businesses would be required to provide or help pay for their employees' insurance.
Nearly 200 protesters were arrested over the weekend when they tried to climb over a barricade at the Capitol building in Washington. They were part of an anti-Iraq war march that drew several thousand people. Before arriving at the Capitol, the demonstrators marched on Pennsylvania Avenue, holding banners and signs. Counter protestors lined the sidewalks behind metal barricades, chanting U-S-A and waving American flags.
