In September 12th, 1990 the National team from tiny Faroe Islands, the 18 rocky island archipelago ancient small Nordic nation having their home far away in North Atlantic, with total population of less than 50.000 and no natural grass pitch in the whole country, combined only by amateurs, made their debut in international soccer competiton. Only two years previously, the Faroes became full members of FIFA and had played 4 friendly internationals so far, beating Canada 1-0, losing to the same opponent and to Iceland twice.
In Swedish town of Landskrona the Faroes faced Austria, fresh from their World cup participation in Italy and several European football stars in the team, including young prospect Andi Herzog, who went to play more games for Austria than any other player, and the legendary striker Toni Polster, the leading goalscorer in the history of Austrian national team.
