Advertising, in general, is very dishonest, manipulative and usually annoying. I especially hate the ad currently running for Lowes. Have you seen it? Here it is.
To start things off, we have our stars of the ad, the couple. They are a seriously goofy looking twosome, especially the woman. She might as well be a Muppet, or the first female Wiggle. And the husband is... what's the opposite of sexy? Suffice to say he's very frumpy in his extra-non-threatening blue sweater. My advice is to not picture them naked. Oops, sorry.
They want hardwood floors and, as the husband states, he doesn't want to "mess with glue or nails." What's wrong with nails? Pick up a hammer, you emasculated douchebag. But it's not the nails they focus in on not wanting. It's the glue. The wife pipes in, "No glue. Our labradoodle has very sensitive skin. We don't want glue in the house." What? Seriously? Your fuckin labradoodle? That's the best they could come up with? A froofroo designer dog with sensitive skin? "It wouldn't be good," she reitterates, as if hearing "no glue" three times in a row hadn't properly convinced us of Mr. and Mrs. Douchenheimer's horrible fear of adhesives.
The Lowes Guy, the one they've been whining to, has his one little line. "No problem." And I'm sure the facial expression he was going for was supposed to be something like "Hey, I got you covered - I can help you do this easily!" But it really looks more like a combination of "Uh oh, I don't know what I'm doing" and "Eww, did somebody fart?"
Who is the target audience here? That's what I can't figure out. Is it people who consider themselves unattractive, timid, anxious and useless?
The one thing I enjoy about hating a particular commercial is that it has the opposite effect on me from its purpose. I am now less likely to shop at Lowes than I would have been before. Thanks, advertising execs! (Less)
