Belgian "Tigers" SQ 31 The 31 squadron was established on October 1 of 1951 at Beauvechain. The same year it moved to (More) The 31 squadron was established on October 1 of 1951 at Beauvechain. The same year it moved to Chièvres to form the 10 Wing. The squadron flew some 151 missions on the Spitfire XIV. The last flight on this aircraft took place on 7 July 1952. From this time there were no more aircraft assigned to the squadron and the pilots were divided between No 23 & No 27 Squadron.
On September 1 of 1953, 31 squadron was reformed assigned for "Instrument Flight" on the Lockheed T-33. By that time the first F-84G "Thunderjet" arrived and taken to the air on October 29 of 1953. By the end of 1955 the T-33 was taken out of service. In this period 31 squadron was relocated several times. Finally on February 1 of 1955 they were located at Kleine Brogel, where they still are today.
In 1956 the "Thunderjet" was replaced by the F-84F "Thunderstreak". On this aircraft the pilots flew a total of 37 000 hours. On July 19 of 1961 the 31 squadron took for the first time part at a "TigerMeet" in Woodbridge (GB).
On March 9 of 1964 the pilots began their conversion to F-104G "Starfighter" which was with great success. 31 Tiger pilot "Aerts François" flew The Last Starfighter (FX-99) to Storage at Coxyde on September 26 of 1983. By this time the Belgian Air Force was fully operational on the F-16 "Fighting Falcon".
In September 1997 The Tigers from "Three-One" exceeded 1000 hours in an F-16 over the territory of Bosnia. Until January 8, 1999 the Tigers were in Villafranca (Italy) for operations over Bosnia and Croatia.
In 2002 the squadron grew in strength when a part of their life long foes (23 Squadron 'Devils') joined up with 31 Squadron after their squadron was disbanded. This also resulted in the arrival of the first Mid Life Updated F-16's. The aircraft on which they are now fully operational.
In 2004 Lithuania became a new NATO member but did not yet have its own air force. Therefore all four EPAF countries provided assets, with Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark providing F-16s. In May they 31 sqn was in Lithuania for QRA (Quick Reaction Alert).
As from 2006 all Belgian squadrons, including the 31 Tiger squadron, are converted to multi-role squadrons. This means former fighter bombers are now able to engage in air combat and vice versa.
From July 2005 till January 2006, 31 was deployed in Kabul, Afghanistan for the operation 'Eastern Eagle', ISAF (International Security and Assistance Force). The detachment was part of a BEL/NDL (Belgium, Netherlands) detachment of 8 F-16s and operated in the EEAW (EPAF Expeditionary Air Wing) under operational controle of the Commander ISAF.
In the years the 31 sqn frequently participated in the Nato Tigermeets were the always arrived in style with niceley painted jets. They already won the Silver Tiger Trophy 6 times. (Less)
