Garageband Original song They Come from the Sky Just when I think I am out of creative juice, I go and create this, mostly synthesizer track. I (More) Just when I think I am out of creative juice, I go and create this, mostly synthesizer track. I could go on for hours about every detail in this song and actually was going create a how 2 vid to show each step, but it would have lasted way to long. The video is what I imagine outer Space must look like when traveling through it. I just grabbed some vids from online to put together for the song.
This song is 90% from scratch or in other words, I am playing the keyboards for the 7 different synthesizers and the drums. I layered the synths as if I where stacking more layers as the song progresses. I used the treble reduction effect the most on the fist synthesizer track (Martian Lounge), then gradually using less as I added each new layer/synthesizer. This will make sure everything is heard and not canceling each other out. For example, if I am singing in the same key as some-1 is playing the piano, guitar and synths-all at the same note & loudness, you would not clearly hear what I would be singing and the sound of the other instruments would get lost in a mesh of sound that's all at the same note. Most unprofessional sounding mixes are due to the off balance of tone frequencies.
I wanted to make sure I introduced a new beat, chord or melody that landed differently for each section of the song to keep the song from becoming stagnant.
When designing the pre chorus, I was trying to drag the beat over to fill up that part of the song and knocked it off beat. I decided to play it and kept it that way. It was a great variation to the verse beat. I can't tell you how many times accidents like that remain in my work and it sounds beautiful. Sometimes I experiment with knocking things like beats, bass, piano or drum lines off beat (by 1 or 2 or even a half beat) and get an unexpected surprise. If you listen closely on the stereo version i have recently posted, there is a little more reverb in the pre-chorus that pans off to the right every other beat. It's hard to notice unless you really listen however reasonably noticeable, if you're listen while wearing headphones. That was the original beat that is a loop and contains an interesting pre-fabricated reverb. I ended up not liking the beat. Many times even when I like the beat, I still go looking in the loop browser for possibly better beats. I lowered the volume of the original beat and aligned it with the snare (claps), so all you hear is the faint reverb of the original loop. This gives it a more 3 dimensional sound and adds variety and interest. It also makes it more life like while not having to increase the reverb of the midi track.
In the second verse after the first chorus, I added I'm not sure what to call it but a sound that leads up a half beat before the snare. As for the kick (bass drum), I have 2 layers. One is the midi layer that has a low frequency and another pre recorded loop that has a high yet still low frequency. This was done so you will be able to hear the bass-y part of the beat in small speakers as well as large bass loving speakers. IT also gave it more substance to have a varying kick drum. It is unusually and I don't think I have ever heard varying kick drums before but somehow this works. I chose this beat from the midi loops but took out a lot of junk and kept the snare drum (the claps) and created my own kick (bass drum) in a separate track. Usually I will add flange to the snare of my mixes but the claps were already spread out between both speakers. The claps are exactly how they are in the original midi loop. I just simply added a slight reverb and raised the high frequency to make it a touch crisper. I think this beat sounds modern. It does kind of sound like beats on the radio these days. I didn't know where else to go with the beat. I really wanted a modern sound, although it does have a retro sound to it. I struggled with the bass line and ultimately decided to take it out! It worked but actually it's still there in 2 different ways. The constant melody through out 90% of the song was once the bass line but I shifted the midi sound up 19 points, meaning to go to 24 (full 2 octaves), again experimenting with different variations and decided to keep it there that way. The chorus is the portion of the song with out the claps and contains an instrument called Persian Santoor from the Word Music Jam Pack. It gives adds a warm "organic" element to the song among the many cold synthesizers in the track. The chorus has a one note bass line and seems to bring each part of a song to a resolved feel.
This song is very William Orbit Like, one of my favorite musical composers. Every one keeps saying not to add lyric to the song and keep it as is. I will post the version with lyrics after it is finished and ask for your thoughts. (Less)
