Father Accused Of Assaulting Baby Girl A 3-month-old baby in Cass County suffered brain trauma and broken bones, and prosecutors said the (More) A 3-month-old baby in Cass County suffered brain trauma and broken bones, and prosecutors said the girl's father is responsible.
KMBC's Jere Gish reported that the infant has been at Children's Mercy Hospital since Friday.
The girl's father is in custody, accused of violently shaking her.
The baby's mother and grandparents said they're shocked at what has happened.
"I never would have dreamed it, never would have dreamed it," grandmother Barbara Sites said.
Sites said she's trying to understand how the granddaughter who lived in her home could have been abused.
"She smiles and she giggles and she's a happy baby, and how could anybody do that to her? I just don't know."
Sites said her daughter, Brandy, lived in her home with the baby's father, Brian Kariuki, 20.
Sites said that on Friday, the girl started having seizures.
"Her left side seemed to do this jerk, even her tongue was just going like this and we didn't know what was going on," Sites said.
They rushed the infant to the hospital. Later, they were told she suffered brain trauma and broken bones.
"My heart went up through my throat and I lost it. I had to go outside, I couldn't believe this was happening to us," Sites said.
Kariuki told police he rocked the infant hard Thursday morning when she wouldn't stop crying.
"I guess when they interviewed Brian, Brian confessed, and it was just, like, a total nightmare for my daughter and myself and my whole family," Sites said.
She said Kariuki has been tired from working the overnight shift at his job.
Sites said Kariuki has been a caring father.
"He's never raised a voice to her. He's very calm, very quiet," Sites said. "It breaks my heart big time, because If you've ever seen her, she smiles when you walk into the room. She's beautiful."
Doctors told the family the baby is expected to recover.
Sites called that a miracle.
Kariuki is being held on felony assault charges. If convicted, he faces 30 years to life in prison. (Less)
