Shred Masterclass: Improvisational Madness
Hello again, and welcome to the Shred Masterclass (More) Hello again, and welcome to the Shred Masterclass series, video lessons by Kristofer Dahl. There was kinda long delay from the last video lesson, however... we are back on track now and new video lessons should be posted on the site every 2 or 3 weeks as usually. So here we go - Shred Masterclass lesson number 4 is called "Improvisational Madness", and is the last "Curious Coincidence" lesson. Next we will have a Kirk Hammett style lesson. Stay tuned! Video Lesson: Hi there fellow rockers, Kris here. Today we are going to put everything we have learned so far into a context - we will deal with the thought process behind improvisation. The Curious Coincidence lessons so far have dealt with a great deal of different licks, tricks and techniques - now it's time to use this information. I want you to start out with the variations demonstrated in this video - as soon as you think you grasp the concept, take you own favorite licks/patterns and do the same with them. You will also notice that not all of the example provided are extremely fast - remember that [once again] music is about creating melodies, and speed licks should mainly be used as tension-builders. (Death metal guitarists may ignore this information.) If this is working for you, I want you to dedicate more and more of your practice routine to improvising and elaborating on improvisation patterns. Not only will this boost your improvisational skills, but being able to improvise around with thechniques of your repertoire is the best way of becoming a confident/relaxed guitarist. Also, make sure to apply the licks and patterns of the "Curious Coincidence" solo to different scales and keys. Improvisation requires practice like anything else - and some days you will feel improvisation isn't working for you. Force yourself and practice anyway - you want to get good don't you?
