Greektown on the Danforth BIA organize a community clean up each Sring season in the month of April (More) Greektown on the Danforth BIA organize a community clean up each Sring season in the month of April for the Mayor's Clean and Beautiful City Campaign. In 2007 a number of students from area schools, the local 54 Division Toronto Police Service officers, and the Greektown BIA spearheaded a vandalism graffiti paint over. Enbridge Gas sent their BBQ to the event, and many companies and people donated their time and efforts to the 'clean up'. Unfortunately, without the 'buy in' of the graffiti community, vandalism graffiti returned to the area. This vandalism can be seen on this video. This video shows the laneway 'cleaned up' one year later -- some of the paint jobs were good, and others not so good... In 2007 there was not an art mural component to the event.. This video is an invitation to the organizers of the annual clean up from 'BUBBLEZ', a graffiti artist working with the Toronto Crime Stoppers program to build community..and give opportunities for youth to be creative and showcase their art.. to include a community building art mural theme for the eventin 2008. The video was recorded by the Toronto Crime Stoppers School Officer the same day that he visited the CAP Bridges Alternative School Program located just around the corner from this laneway. Many youths who are graffiti artists were in the audience. Their teachers indicated that a number of the artists would be very interested in doing legal graffiti art murals in this laneway. The idea is that once the kids get an opportunity, their art work will be respected, and vandalism tags will not occur. By having an aritst leader like 'BUBBLEZ' patrolling the laneway after the event, and improving the art work with many artists as he goes, a sense of community will occur. It is hoped that this strategy would make the laneway into a tourist gallery for legal graffiti art, and attract business to the area. A number of recent very serious crimes were discussed at the presentation to the kids at CAP Bridges(the very recent gun murder of Abdikarim Abdikarim, the usolved shooting murder of teenager 'SPECKZ' and the stabbing death of Dinesh Murugiah to name a few.. Also discussed was the abandoned baby case 'Angelica Leslie' and the group on Facebook.com called 'WHO AM I ?' that was set up by Crime Stoppers to identify an 8 month old baby abandoned in -14 degree weather in a concrete stairwell on January 30, 2008. The Toronto Crime Stoppers School Program has undertaken a number of projects that includes graffiti writers as part of the 'solution'. The effect of this is not only in a reduction of vandalism graffiti, but allows the art work of the graffiti writers to be showcased, and it improves the relationships of the graffiti writes with their local community representatives and the police. In fact, since working with the graffiti writers as part of the Toronto Crime Stoppers school program, Toronto Crime SToppers set a record for the # of anonymous tips received to assist police in preventing and solving crime, and locating missing persons.
