I knew about the race from a timelapse movie I saw on a Vancouver blog: temporaldistortions.blogspot.com/2007/04/vancouver-sun-run-time-lapse.html ...and I wanted to be part of this "largest 10k race in North America" (more than 59.000 people took part this year). It was a nice experience to actually walk the streets of a downtown area like Vancouver. I first rendered this video like I 'normally' do - but I really like the 'Magic Bullet Look'. However, MBL is not yet available for Sony Vegas, so I asked Eugenia vimeo.com/eugenia if she knew some other solution. As always, she had an answer that was helpful. UPDATE: MBL now comes in a version for Sony Vegas: redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-looks/ This link: download.sonymediasoftware.com/current/extras/vegasmovielooks_hd.exe (right click and choose save destination as... is one of the first versions of MBL and even better, it's free :) So, if you have Sony Vegas and want to try it out, go ahead. Download and install in default folder - Sony Vegas will automatically find it and add it (to video effects). One thing you have to know, though, is that rendering times are multiplied by 20 or so - this 7 minute clip took 25 hours to render on my PC (AVCHD / mpeg4 files to WMV). I used 'Bleach bypass' and 'Bronze' for this clip. I'm aware that I might have gone over the top here, but what the heck, I'm still a newbie :) Let me know what you think. (Less)
Canon EOS 7D Strike 3 Epic Fail: Where is Scarlet Mc VaporWare? This is footage I shot with the Canon EOS 7D on Oct 3 2009 in a camera store in LA. I have read all (More) This is footage I shot with the Canon EOS 7D on Oct 3 2009 in a camera store in LA. I have read all of the postings and watched all of the videos that people have shot with the 5D MKII, the 7D, and the GH1. look at the aliasing artifacts on the lower part of the glass case. This is what everybody seems to edit out or pretend does not exist. The 7D aliasing in 720p 60fps is much worse than the 5D MKII 30p footage. The 7D aliasing in 1080p 30fps is the same as the 5D MKII 30p footage. The 7D aliasing in 1080p 24fps is the same as the 5D MKII 30p footage. The aliasing in the 5D MKII footage is completely unacceptable, and so is the 7D. So to recap, the GH1 produces MUD in all frame rates, What is MUD? mud looks like you got the blur tool in Photoshop and randomly placed it in the shot all over. And don't forget the color banding, no import into Final Cut Pro without first buying Voltaic HD or NeoScene $$$ stupid bandwidth wasting Voodoo pulldown. Thanks for nothing Panasonic. I bought one and sold it two days later. A big thanks to all you guys that got pre release GH1's and spent months shooting on them then posting all of your wonderful videos that were carefully shot using a tripod or dolly, never once speaking of these problems, you know who you are! I will no longer listen to these people. The 5D MKII has aliasing artifacts on every horizontal surface. People were so caught up in the pretty shallow depth of field madness that no one shot any deep focus footage and saw the problems. I did, it took me 5 seconds to see the problem and it took me 3 months to realize the only solution to this problem is to shoot close up shots with a shallow depth of field. I tried knocking the background out of focus, oops so goes the foreground out of focus. Then I tried a #2 soft filter, same problem only this time it has that Joan Collins Star Trek Yuk factor. I give up I will just shoot shallow focus from now on with the 5D MKII. Try this your self, get a 24mm 2.8 or faster lens put it on the Canon 5D MKII and set the focus to infinity. now go and shoot a brick wall, roof top, power lines, a person wearing glasses, the front of a fender twin reverb amp, the front of any car grill, the back of a Metro Bus, stairs, steps, the top of pews in a church, people wearing stripes, so on and so on.... you get the picture. Q: What is the 5D MKII video mode good for then? A: Beautiful close up shots with a very shallow depth of field. Q: What is the 7D video mode good for then? A: Beautiful close up shots with a very shallow depth of field. Q: What is the GH1 video mode good for then? A: Beautiful close up shots with a very shallow depth of field. Q: Can I shoot any of these cameras hand held in video mode? A: No! Q: Why? A: Rolling Shutter artifacts. = Jello-Cam and skew. To be fair most 3CCD camcorders hand held = Parkinson's-Cam. Indie film makers can get the most out of these cameras as all shots are pre planned to a script. I recommend film makers get a 7D and or GH1 for your 24p shallow depth of field close up shots and a 3CCD camcorder (HMC-150 - HPX-170 no 35mm adapter needed) for everything else. Same thing for people shooting weddings. If you must over crank with shallow depth of field use the GH1 720 60p mode not the Super Aliasing 7D. Bla Bla Bla low light capabilities, Who cares fast lenses, light for film and get to work. there is no free lunch here. I have seen a lot of great DSLR sample video footage here on Vimeo but no movies. these DSLR cameras are all one trick ponies, so use them for the trick that they do best and get a 3CCD camcorder for all the rest. One day Panasonic Nikon or Canon will wise up and give us a full frame DSLR camera or a camcorder with a CMOS sensor and global shutter that records every pixel or giant pixels that do not need to be skipped. but for now we get left over craptastic one trick pony toy cameras. Remember, if you continue to buy the island of misfit toys DSLR cameras they don't have to make better ones. NIKON IF YOU ARE LISTENING, THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO MAKE A BETTER DSLR WITH VIDEO MODE. Strike one D90, Strike two D5000, Strike three D300s. SO FAR NIKON IS DOWN THERE WITH THE MINO HD. USELESS! Maybe Canon is scared of making a functional DSLR with real video capabilities that would cut into their camcorder sales. Guess what Canon the company that makes the first useable DSLR with video capabilities will take the entire market. Q: What do you mean by "functional DSLR with real video capabilities"? A: S35 or FF35 sized CMOS sensor with a global shutter, adjustable gain +4db balanced audio inputs, auto focus in video mode like the GH1, either bigger pixels = 2K not 4K or read the 4K sensor and don't skip lines. I will never use any of these cameras for still pictures so make a camera with a full frame CMOS 4MP sensor instead of a stupid 21MP (effective) fuzzy math aliasing mesurbating nightmare. Feel free to justify your 5D MKII purchase by getting mad at me for telling you this. hopefully this will make the next group of (Canon beta testers) I mean customers think of what it is they are trying to do before spending $2700 on a not video camera with on purpose permanently crippled video functions. I bet 5D sales are dead at this point. those of you that are going to buy a 7D will go through the same fate as the 5D owners once Panasonic puts out an updated GH1 type camera body that records AVCHD video at 24Mb or higher for under $1000. Don't bother downloading the .mov file as I dropped it to 24fps in QT. The original 60p file looks just as bad. I also shot some great clean steady 1080 24p 7D footage but you can go look at any of that guy's 7D videos and get an ideal of what a film maker can do with this or any other camera. I am sure that a film maker can make the Mino HD look fantastic or maybe even an iPhone. By the way everyone seems to be dumping their 5D MKII's driving the used market down to half the price. Maybe buy a used FF35 5D MKII instead of the smaller sensor 7D 1.6 crop with a fake 60p mode. Pros and Cons: GH1 Pros: 24p, 60p, full auto tracking focus, flip out screen, lots of mount adapters for a lot of lenses, SD cards are cheap. GH1 Cons: No live HDMI in video mode, fake 30p=MJPEG, stupid bandwidth wasting pulldown, need to transcode for mac before viewing footage, MUD everywhere in all frame rates, a five on the D90 Jello-Cam scale. Mediocre still camera. EOS 7D Pros and Cons: 7D Pros: Beautiful shallow depth of field close up footage, live 1080i HDMI in video mode while recording, easy to use. 7D Cons: 720 60p is complete shit full of aliasing artifacts much worse than any 5D MKII footage I have ever seen, stupid DOS card format writes up to 4GB files at a time = 12 minutes. what dumb-ass thought this was a good ideal?, no auto focus in video mode, good Nikon mount adapters are very expensive (NOVOFUCKT) and Canon FD adapters use another optic lens so no way, you are stuck with crappy plastic expensive EF / EFS glass or worse, mediocre still camera not full frame, lots-o- Jello-Cam. EOS 5D MKII Pros and Cons: 5D Pros: Beautiful FF35mm shallow depth of field close up footage. "Chirping Crickets" thats it, one trick pony. 5D Cons: 30p frame rate only, live HDMI is 480 not 1080, 1080 30p is total crap full of aliasing artifacts, stupid DOS card format writes up to 4GB files at a time = 12 minutes. what dumb-ass thought this was a good ideal?, no auto focus in video mode, good Nikon mount adapters are very expensive (NOVOFUCKT) and Canon FD adapters use another optic lens so no way, you are stuck with crappy plastic expensive EF glass or worse, lots-o- Jello-Cam. Dear Canon, Nikon, Panasonic. please disable the still camera mode on these DSLR cameras and drop the price to $500.00 each. you will still sell the exact same amount of units and we wont hate you for selling us craptastic videoish cameras on the bait and switch rape rape roller coaster of Planned Obsolescence. PS. Where is RED Scarlet Mc VaporWare? (Less)
