Over the past 14 months the Friends of the Colac Library Inc. have worked tirelessly on behalf of the 7000 plus Library members and infact the majority of the Community who don't want the Colac Library to close and become a "Joint-Use" Library inside a School. The "FOCL"S" have hand delivered almost 4000! pamphlets in regard to the 21 Candidates who are standing. The "Instigators" of the Joint-Use Library [Cr. Smith/Cr. Riches and Cr. Mercer] have formed an "Alliance" of 8, who are "Moving forward together"! more like they are going backwards and taking the Community with them! The three Councillors mentioned above have Misslead the Public of Colac, Stating time and again the the Govt will no longer fund "Stand Alone" Libraries, and yet we see Geelong Libraries recieving millions of dollars in funding along with Hobsons Bay! As for the line "one stop post compulsory Education shop" The "Global Connector" has NO tafe, it has NO ACE! They have pulled out and are setting up in the old wesley church! refer to Colac herald 27th oct 08, "the training facility will be in partnership with Gordon TAFE, Otway Community College[ACE] and Skills Connection" Mr Peter Kelly [services development manager] said. So the "Global Connector" is NOTHING more than a School Library that the Public are allowed to use! Currently 30 People an hour use the Colac Public Library [54,000] People a year, is it a good idea to have 54,000 people a year entering School Property? The Joint-Use Library will be funded by a 1.3 million dollar loan from the Council, and then it will be 100% owned by the Education Dept! But the Council will pay 50% insurance and 50% maintenance costs each year for a minimum of 30 years! Gee, that means your State Govt tax and your Rates will pay for a School Building! So people in Colac will pay twice for their Childrens School Library. The Council employed an expert on Joint-Use libraries one MR Alan Bundy who clearly states on his web sites that "JUL's" should be centrally located, should NOT be mixed with Education Staff etc, should be a "Free Standing" Building, that all staffing and management issues should be "worked out" prior to going ahead with a project, and that JUL's work best in populations of 3500 or less! Our JUL has a Principal's office in it! It is 1.8 km out of town! Colac has a population of 14,000 or more! NO staffing/management issues have been worked out! Mr Bundy also states that the Community should be in agreement, Our Council has recieved over 4000 signed petitions against the JUL. So it would appear that the council has totally Ignored the Consultant they paid for! It has become obvious that the Council does not care about the people they are paid [$15000] a year to represent,infact when asked about the Children as young as 12 being forced to mix with 'Unknown" members of the public their answer is always the same "IT IS NOT AN ISSUE" There have been assaults take place this week at Colac college! never mind when 54,000 members of the public get in! There is a $500,000 [living Libraries fund] available from the State Govt for extentions and improvements to our Colac Public Library, [the Council won't tell you that] Yes their are great opportunities to improve the existing Library that Cr. Mercer has been running in to the ground for years! There are less books now than there were 3 years ago, and the JUL would have 20,000 LESS books than that! The Gloves are well and truly OFF! The "Alliance" must be run out of the town they have been destroying for too long, We must remember the Apollo Bay flood plain, and the "Lets get together and destroy the Harbour" Scheme too! People of Colac the opportunity to rid Colac Otway Shire of these "Dictators" is in YOUR hands. Colac needs Councillors who LISTEN to the Community NOT Dictators who are controlled by a few people who believe they have more power than YOU! The most powerful entity in the world is PEOPLE POWER!
