WHY DOES THIS VIDEO HAVE 4666 VIEWS? So exciting. I converted my WebCam to see the Infrared spectrum of light, in addition to the visible (More) So exciting. I converted my WebCam to see the Infrared spectrum of light, in addition to the visible spectrum. Now it turns out that warm clothes are very bright in the infrared spectrum, meaning that they must reflect it strongly which is probably part of the reason why they're warm. Whod've thunk it. So anyway my black tshirt and dark blue sweater appear bright white so it looks like I'm wearing white, hahah. Cold clothes like jeans or (non-woolly) jackets appear dark. There's a lot of infrared light out there, the sun emits loads of it (not as much on cloudy days). The typical incandescent lightbulb emits over 80% of it's energy use as "heat", or in most part, infrared. This means that such light sources are VERY bright under my new and improved web cam. Now the modern energy saving lightbulbs emit nearly no IR (that's HOW they are efficient - by not generating light people can't see with) which means while illuminated solely by the lightbulb above me everything appears normal, but turn on an IR light source and I'm suddenly wearing white, hahahah. Anyway the MAIN point of anything which can see in IR is playing with remote controls - oh sure there's other uses like covert spying and detecting brown dwarf stars through telescopes - but the MAIN use is playing with remote controls. pew pew pew! Die Jar Jar Binks! Also of course the webcam doesn't know how to interpret IR light, and even if it did, humans still wouldn't be able to perceive it meaningfully, this is why it mostly shows as just "brightness". Also sometimes it appears the sheer intensity of the light overloads certain colors - when the "tint" changes in the video this is NOT due to a software effect, it's the webcam getting messed up! hahah! My webcam is lucky to still be alive! And finally modern camcorders with a nightvision mode just use infrared plus a IR LED on the cam (for illumination) and finally add a monochrome green tint (in software) to make it look like real light-amplification nightvision (which is actually green because of phosphorous). It's a cool trick though. If you wonder what the heck the point of this descripto-essay was - I'm just being science nerdy. Music: "Computer Slave" (Ambient Frequencies), the moaning at the end is ripped from a video game. (Less)
