Blaqk Audio Q&A from Milwaukee 8/8/07 [Please, please, please excuse the irritating laughter.]
It's a video I took from the (More) [Please, please, please excuse the irritating laughter.]
It's a video I took from the Milwaukee listening party. Don't bother trying to see anything, it was too dark for my camera to pick up anything. The audio is pretty good, though.
Since it's hard to hear some parts, I typed up (to my best ability) what they said and what went on during the Q&A:
Davey: I feel like a motivational speaker right now. "You CAN do it! Positive minds, positive body. We're here to show you guys today that you CAN succeed with the right outlook."
Jade: Or a spelling bee, maybe.
Davey: Yeah, a spelling bee?
Jade: Though judging by our album we can't spell very well.
Davey: Yeah. Jade didn't do that, that's because I can't spell. Jade can really spell, he's a good speller. He won a mini spelling bee.
Jade: ck, not qk.
Davey: See, I argued with him forever. I'm very tall, though. But this is not about hearing us talk-
Jade: Oh!
(various mumbling by all the guys on stage)
Jade: Gentlemen- (more mumbling and talking all at once)
Interviewer: From these fine people out here... (more mumbling) Can we turn up this mic a little bit? (the mic isn't turned up right away, but it comes later) So guys, obviously, this is a "side-project" that goes back to like 2001, 2002 when you were kinda flirting with the idea of getting it together and putting Blaqk Audio on the market, so to speak, for your fans. Is (the mic turned up at that point, and it was TERRIBLY loud, so that's why everyone starts laughing) Is- (Davey and Jade both wince on stage, and Davey closes his eyes, looks away and whispers "wow")...Is this actually a side-project? Or is this just another band? It's going to take up another 2 years of your life-
Davey: It's basically it's own entity...
Jade: Yeah, I don't think it's going to take up two years of our lives necessarily, but, uh, you know- we're going to- it's a completely different thing, so it's not really like a project, necessarily, it's a band with a record out, we're going to do a short tour, so yeah...
Interviewer: Is this writing you were doing while touring? Between AFI shows? And you're there anyway, so you can collaborate? Hammer it out?
Davey: Well, the way it works is that Jade spent most of the time writing songs on the tour bus and his hotel room-
Jade: Right.
Davey: and his house, and then when I get home I would take the files and write the melodies.
Interview: Jade's kind of like a freak when it comes down to programming, isn't he? With electronics? You're like the kid that sits in his room all night long and can't get enough of the music. And that's awesome, because on the tour you do need something to do besides drugs (I have no idea if these guys knew about the straight-edge thing and they were trying to joke about it or not haha). We do have questions from the audience, if you guys don't mind. You ready for some questions from your fans?
Jade: Shooot.
Interview: Awesome. Here's the first question. This one's coming from Amanda in Milwaukee. "Do you ever find it hard to be in two bands? PS I love you."
Davey: (quietly, regarding the "I love you") what did SHE write?
Jade: Not so far.
Davey: No, no not so far.
Jade: AFI just got done touring on um, Decemberunderground so we're basically off right now, so it worked out pretty well.
Interviewer: Cool.
Davey: I mean, we did spend all of our free time working on this, writing and recording it, but it wasn't hard. It was a pleasure.
Jade: We're type-A personalities.
Interviewer: Let's get a bit more serious - "If life were a box of crayons, what would you be?" Lauren wants to know.
Davey: Ooooh.
Jade: I'd be burnt sienna.
Davey: I'd be...periwinkle.
Jade: They have to be the big box- with like 83 crayons.
Interviewer: 64, 83...yeah, with the sharpener on the back.
Davey: Yeah, you have to get those deeper colors, those more important colors.
Interviewer: I would have guessed black.
Davey or Jade: Hmm.
Interviewer: Was that a little too obvious?
Jade: Hmm, yeah...
Davey: You would be wrong. You'd be wronnnng.
Interviewer: Okay, sorry about that Davey. When did you guys decide to play electronic music?
Davey: I guess we decided in 2001, 2002-
Jade: When we first decided to do this project. So...
Interviewer: Whoever wrote that, thank you.
Jade: Thank you!
Interviewer: One more, this one's lengthy..."my friends and I define an 'audiofuck' as a song or music that makes you weak in the knees and does you in. For us, Cexcells is an audiofuck. What is your audiofuck, essentially what makes you weak in the knees musically?
Davey: Well, actually, I have a legitimate answer to this question. I had to do a sort of sex scene in a modeling shoot I was doing the other day and they asked me what I should put on and I put on "This Is Hardcore," on repeat, by Pulp.
Interviewer: Wow!
Davey: And it worked.
Interviewer: You brought it?
Davey: Yeah. The girl was forced into pretending to like me.
Jade: Really?!
Interviewer: By "Pulp." Write that down.
Jade: I like "audiofuck," that's a good term.
Davey: Yeah, I like that.
Interviwer: Okay. And this is from Andy from Fond Du Lac, right here in Wisconsin..."are you guys going to be starting an AFI/Blaqk Audio tour?"
Jade: A...Blaqk Audio tour we're starting in...less than a month. Um, AFI just got done touring for a year, so uh, probably we're going to start writing another record before we tour.
Interviewer: Aaaand finally, Jade, since you're named after an ornamental stone used as decoration (haha wasn't he named after Mick Jagger's daughter?), do you have any kids?
Jade: Do I have any kids? No, I don't.
Interviewer: Okay, uhh...would you rather name your first child if you ever have one, "Alabastor (that's what it sounded like, anyway)" or "Marble" which are two kinds of ornamental stone?
Jade: Yeah, I actually thought about that. I thought if I had a son, I would name him "Salt" but I'd spell it "NaCl." (At this point, Davey gets up off of his seat, covering his mouth as he is laughing, and walks behind the other fm 1021 guy)
Interviewer: I really appreciate that kind of humor. (then they just finish up with the whole "this is an fm 1021 exclusive, you guys are going to get a CD and they're going to allow you to come get it autographed, so come on up...) (Less)
