John Lennon John Winston Lennon (Liverpool, 9 oktober 1940 New York City, 8 december 1980) was een popmusicus (More) John Winston Lennon (Liverpool, 9 oktober 1940 New York City, 8 december 1980) was een popmusicus die bekend werd als oprichter van de Liverpoolse groep The Quarrymen, die later bekend werd als The Beatles. Samen met Paul McCartney, George Harrison en Ringo Starr had Lennon met deze groep een belangrijke rol in de popmuziek. Lennon wordt tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog geboren te Liverpool, als zoon van de steward Alfred Lennon en Julia Stanley, volgens eigen zeggen een ouvreuse. Zijn vader, die tijdens en na de oorlog vaak maanden op zee was, besloot toen Lennon vijf jaar oud was in Nieuw-Zeeland te gaan wonen. Lennon woonde vanaf zijn vierde jaar bij de zuster van zijn moeder, Mimi. Die kon volgens zijn oma beter een kind opvoeden dan Julia. Mimi was een goed mens, maar volgens John veel te streng. Hij kreeg niet veel liefde uit haar. Zijn vader zou hij pas in 1964 terugzien. Zijn moederliefde kreeg hij van zijn moeder, die op 15 juli 1958 werd doodgereden door een dronken politieman. Grootvader Jack Lennon was in 1858 in Liverpool gaan wonen, maar kwam uit Ierland; de familienaam, O'Leannain of O'Lionnain, komt veel voor in de graafschappen Fermanagh en Galway. Zowel Lennons grootvader als diens vader verdienden hun inkomen als zanger; voor Lennons vader was zingen een bijverdienste. Ook Lennons zonen, Julian en Sean, hebben met wisselend succes een carriere in de muziekindustrie nagevolgd. Beiden hebben echter weinig fysieke steun gehad van hun vader. John verliet Julian en zijn moeder Cynthia Powels toen Julian nog een kleine jongen was, -John zou nooit meer terugkeren naar Groot Brittannie. Sean verloor zijn vader op 5 jarige leeftijd toen die vermoord werd door een gestoorde fan. Alhoewel fysiek afwezig, en ook opgevoed door verschillende moeders (en pleegvaders), hebben beide zonen in hun carriere wel te maken gekregen met de enorme schaduw van Johns muzikale erfenis. Lennon is een markant figuur in de popmuziek gebleken. Toen de Beatles in het midden van de jaren 60 besloten zich meer uit te spreken over maatschappelijke vraagstukken en de gebeurtenissen in de wereld (bijvoorbeeld Vietnam), tegen de wens van manager Brian Epstein in, ontwikkelde Lennon zich tot een spreekbuis van een generatie. John Lennon veroorzaakte een internationale rel en een boycot van de Beatles door een interview met de Evening Standard. "The Beatles zijn populairder dan Jezus Christus", beweerde hij, wat hem niet alleen kwam te staan op een platenboycot in de USA, maar ook op een etherboycot door de NCRV. Lennon kwam meer en meer onder invloed van de avant-garde kunstenares Yoko Ono. Hij verliet zijn toenmalige vrouw Cynthia Powell en trouwde in maart 1969 met Yoko Ono. Zijn huwelijk met Cynthia dateerde van 23 augustus 1962. Het paar had een zoon, Julian. Onder invloed van Ono werd Lennon radicaler, en maakte hij langzaam een beweging naar links. Hij nam bijvoorbeeld in 1968 Revolution met de Beatles op. De harde singleversie (de B-kant van Hey Jude) was al duidelijk uitgesproken, maar in de zachtere elpeeversie op The White Album (die eerder was opgenomen) toonde hij zijn twijfel over de richting waarin hij ging. "We all want to change the world/but when you talk about destruction/don't you know that you can count me out" waarbij in het nummer het laatste woord veranderde in in. In november van dat jaar gaven Johnandyoko (ze zagen zich als een eenheid) de elpee Two Virgins uit met een naaktfoto als hoes. De muziek, als men daarvan nog kan spreken, werd steeds obscuurder. The White Album bevatte al een ontoegankelijke geluidscollage van Lennon's hand (Revolution 9); The Wedding Album (1969) bevatte opnames van hun hartslagen met om en om hun voornamen geschreeuwd; Live with the Lions (1969) bevatte opnames van alleen maar stilte. Toen de Beatles langzaam ophielden te bestaan, ging Lennon solo en sprak hij zich nog meer uit. In maart 1969 bleven John en Yoko bij wijze van huwelijksreis een week lang (van 25 maart t/m 31 maart) in bed in kamer 902 in het Amsterdamse Hilton Hotel (de "Bed-In"), om zich op die manier voor de vrede uit te spreken. In juli 1969 werd de anti-oorlogsmantra Give peace a chance uitgebracht, die opgenomen is tijdens hun tweede Bed-In (volgens sommigen hun derde, na een mislukte Bed-In op de Bahama's) in het Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montral (Canada). In oktober bracht John met de Plastic Ono Band de klassieker Cold Turkey uit, en in november stuurde hij zijn MBE-medaille terug uit protest tegen de oorlog in Biafra. In februari 1970 schoor Lennon zijn lange haren af en bracht Instant Karma! uit. (Less)

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the revolutionary album, Will Taylor and Strings Attached will transport audiences on a psychedelic journey through the legendary music of the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band" album, Friday, May 25th and Sunday, May 27th, at St. David's Church and the Nutty Brown Café, respectively.

This Grammy Award winning album, dubbed by many as the 'greatest album of all time', expands upon the musical influences of blues, pop and rock to incorporate a wide range of experimental instruments and imaginative lyrics. Controversial for it's time, the album was released in 1967, building upon the 'Beatlemania' of the early 60's, and was an instant success.
Add to this Will Taylor's own signature style of instrumentation; an ensemble cast of musicians, including a string quartet, horn section, tabla, sitar; and some of Austin's most renowned guest artists, and these performances promise to be an incredible evening of entertainment. Timeless crowd-pleasers such as "With a Little Help from My Friends", "A Day in the Life", "When I'm 64" and "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" are just a sampling of what to expect as the album will be performed in its entirety. From controversial to mainstream, the music of the "Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band" album remains as innovative and enjoyable today as it was 40 years ago.
Recipient of numerous music awards, including this year's winner of the Austin Music Award's strings category, Will Taylor continues to 'wow' audiences with his unique brand of musical compilations and collaborations with talented guest performers. This event is one not to be missed!
Last year, Will Taylor and Strings Atached performed the entire Beatles White Album live to an audience of over 1600 Austin music fans.
