Rejoining Life after Fibromyalgia * Please note- I do not sell anything. *

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2004.
I tried drugging the disease to death, and at one time was on 13 different pharmaceuticals. An unlucky number, to be sure. I never felt worse in my life.
And, I was never in so much pain as when I was on a whole boatload of "painkillers."
So, I realized "drugging" the disease to death just wasn't going to work.
Frankly, it felt like it was going to be the death of me.
I'm not sure which was worse-- the symptoms of fibromyalgia, the side-effects of the medications, or the medications you had to take to counter the side-effects of the other medications.
So, I began networking online with other people who had fibromyalgia, figuring I'd have to take charge of my own health if I wanted to get my life back.
Four years later, I am leading the life of a "normal" again.
Yes, I do still have fibromyalgia.
The disease is incurable, and until a cure is found, nothing can change that reality.
I do still have days that are impacted by pain, sometimes severely.
However, the quality of life I have now, compared to the quality of life I had four years ago, is very different.
People who meet me now are surprised to learn I have fibromyalgia, because I do not "behave" like other people they have met who have the disease.
I don't usually mention to new people I meet that I have the disease, but I certainly don't mind talking about it, (obviously.)
Most everyone at my son's school knows me, but hardly anyone there knows I have fibro.
Sure, they know me as the parent who coached kindergarten P.E. (Physical Education) in the fall. Some of the kids still call me "Coach Diana."
(I had to coach in both English and Spanish, which was a bit of a challenge, since I took French & German in high school.)
They know me as the parent who worked on the Distinguished Schools project for 7 months, sometimes staying at the school for 8, 10 or even 12 hour days. (And, yes, we won!)
And, they know me as the lady who prefers to ride a bike to school, rather than drive a car. (There are people who drive their cars two or three blocks to pick their kids up from school. I kid you not, they really do. They'll go to a meeting, complaining P.E. has been cut from the budget, but won't walk three blocks to pick up their kids from school.) (We are about a mile from the school, maybe a little more.)
But, am I known as "that lady with the fibromyalgia?"
No. Fibromyalgia does not define who I am, or rule my life.
It used to, but not anymore.
The focus of today's video is about rejoining the world of living, after fibromyalgia has taken away the life you used to have.
After four years on the Guai Protocol, I have rejoined the world of "the normals."
You can get your life back, maybe not exactly the way it was before, but you can create a new reality for yourself... maybe an even better one, with healthier habits.
Today's video, complete with a bit of a musical medley is about "Rejoining Life."
I find music to be very joyous, and life has become joyous for me once again.
Four years ago, upon meeting me for the first time, a doctor asked me: "Tell me this, do you ever smile?"
Whoa. Fibromyalgia had changed me that much! Well, no longer. I am back. I'm turning 39 this week, and the best years of my life are all still ahead of me, not behind me.
There is a tendency to withdraw from life due to the cyclical nature of fibromyalgia, and not knowing when you are going to be caught in a bad pain cycle.
If you have any questions on the terminology I use in my video blogs, such as the "Guai Protocol," or "cycling," (which is different from bicycling, which you see my family doing at the beginning of the video), I explain these terms in the FAQs on my website: www.surfercouple.com.
There is nothing commercial, ever, on my website. I do not sell anything. I have a blog about adult fibromyalgia, talking about my experiences, an one about Juvenile Fibromyalgia, talking about my kindergartner. (Yes, the disease is genetic.)
