How to draw KANJI-the Japanese use of Chinese character-#01愛 For the benefit of those who want to learn Japanese (NIHONGO) ---"The history of MANA(KANJI) (More) For the benefit of those who want to learn Japanese (NIHONGO) ---"The history of MANA(KANJI) & KANA"--- 1. In tha early 7th century,Japanese have imported Chinese-character system for writing letters, but they use it as syllabary ,not as characters system. It is called "MA-NA"(in ro-ma_ji)"真名"(in kanji) 2. Among the 8th~9th centuries, for the usage of character as in origin-Chinese,and for translation into Japanese(NIHONGO),people were beginning to use a partition of one MANA = KANJI( 漢字 / かんじ / カンジ) Such as カout of 加, タ out of 多, ナout of 奈. This is called "KATAKANA"(in ro-ma_ji)"カタカナ"(in katakana) 3.And,probably,in the 9th or 10th century, the more&more-cursive style of MANA / kanji became acceptable for writing. Such as ひ made from 比, ら made from 良, か made from 加, な made from 奈... This is "HIRAGANA / ひらがな" 4. In the middle of 19th century, Dr James Curtis Hepburn, an American medical missionary, has published a "Japanese-English and English-Japanese Dictionary" both in ROMAN and in KANA. And in its 3rd edition(1887),he took the ROMANIZING-NIHONOGO method of the RO-MA_JI_KAI / 羅馬字会 in adoption to his method.it was widespread in Japan. It is called "ro-ma_ji in HEBON / ヘボン style".---ji / 字 [ じ ] means printed letter or character , So to write Japanese by using the letters(or Capitals) from Rome , it is called "ro-ma_ji de kaku" / ローマ字 [ じ ] で書 [ か ] く, and also to type Japanese by using the letters (or Capitals) from Rome ,is that "ro-ma_ji nyuu_ryoku / ローマ字 [ じ ] 入力 [ にゅう・りょく ]---(羅馬字会 / Ro-ma_ji_kai is the association of Romanaizing-study which was established by Japanese people in 1885 , and maybe you want to know, why does putting "R" in Ro-ma_ji to indicate "L" sound ? Sorry ,i am not sure, but i can easily guess ; Since there is not distinction between "R"sound and "L"sound in Japanese language,so they had to choose one of them, and they decided to take "R" , because it was from and out of "Roma" ) As you see,in HIRAGANA, HI=ひ RA=ら GA=が NA=な HIRAGANA / ひらがな is used as the MORA. : MORA is the minimum unit of voice-length---------- (1)a sound which includes only one-vowel like [ " あ/a " , " か/ka "] is regarded as 1-MORA, (2) "n"or"nn"-sound ん is also regarded as 1- MORA, (3) and mute-[q]sound っ is also regarded as 1-MORA [this is a small form of HIRAGANA つ ,when typing this , you should put the same consonant as double like " t(ta)/っ(た) " or " p(pa)/っ(ぱ) " ] (4)きゃ/kya , きゅ/kyu , きょ/kyo , ぎゃ/gya , ぎゅ/gyu, ぎょ/gyo ,しゃ/sya , みゃ/mya...etc. ---those kind of 33 sounds such as ; [consonant"k" , "g" , "s","z(j)","t(ts)(ch)","n","h","b(v)","p","m",and "r(l)" + y + vowel "a" or "u" or "o"] are also regarded as 1-MORAs. (5)long-vowel or double-vowel such as [ あー/a-(a:) , いい/ii , えい/ei ] is regarded as 2-MORAs. ----------for analyzing some of the natural languages. i said "some of" , that's because not all natural languages have this MORA-unit,because each one-MORA should be pronounced in the same length of time-line when they are in a same & standard context, just like the Music-quarter-note in the same bar.And more than one MORA can combine into the one-syllable such as "a_i" 愛 ,"ko_i" 恋 both of these have two-MORAs but make one-syllables;this kind of syllable is so called "multi-syllable"(or "heavy-syllable" in linguistics-term usage). Japanese language is one of the MORA languages , so if you want to speak Japanese fluently, you should get used to this MORA-multi(or -heavy)-syllables. And the good-practice is the only way to get it. SO nowdays, We use KATAKANA / カタカナ as the substitute for so-called mono(or light-only)-syllables for copying the sounds of foreign languages,or for expressing by onomatopoeia and mimesis (or mimics), or to emphasize the specific-word phonetically from other words in the same written-sentence. KANJI(MANA) / 漢字 as the characters, and HIRAGANA / ひらがな as the MORAs. AND also, you know,Ro-ma_ji is still very useful for typing. (Less)
2/2 The Most Frequent 1000 Kanji of the Japanese Language Here are the most frequently used 1000 Kanji in the Japanese language according to a survey of 55 (More) Here are the most frequently used 1000 Kanji in the Japanese language according to a survey of 55 million characters done by the National Language Research Institute. It includes 993 main entry characters found in levels A and B of the Joyo Kanji lists. Presented for you are the individual Kanji and below the English root word, that is the keyword that gives the most concise meaning. Some of the English meanings have additional words in parentheses, this was added to clarify certain meanings. For example, in English "light" can mean light in weight, light in color, or light from the sun. There are also entries in brackets, these are not actual root words, but used to indicate conceptual Kanji such as counters or grammatical stems. If you can see, there are numbers on the bottom, the middle number is the character entry number found in _The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary_ which is the source material and a very useful book, and the frequency number on the right.
I don't know how else to climb this mountain of Kanji other than to take it one step at a time. There are no readings presented here, since each Kanji has anywhere from one reading to a dozen. This presentation is just the first 1000 Kanji, there are more than 1000 to go. Combinations of two or more Kanji make up over 10,000 words and form the majority of concepts in the Japanese language. Please leave any comments or questions. Will consider suggestions for further projects.
