The song was written by Carole King and appeared on her 1971 album Tapestry. It has been named one of the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. James Taylor sang a version of "You've Got a Friend" on his 1971 album Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. The most famous version of the song, Taylor's rendition hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 31, 1971, and won Grammy Awards both for Taylor (Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male) and King (Song of the Year). It also reached #4 in the UK Singles Chart, giving Taylor his only Top 20 entry in the United Kingdom. The song was also recorded in 1971 by Dusty Springfield, a recording that predates Taylor's version. It was recorded for her third album for Atlantic Records, but a falling-out with the company meant the album was unreleased. The song was left unissued until 1999, when it was issued as a bonus track for the Rhino Records deluxe re-release of Dusty in Memphis. When youre down and troubled And you need a helping hand And nothing, whoa nothing is going right. Close your eyes and think of me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest nights. You just call out my name, And you know whereever I am Ill come running, oh yeah baby To see you again. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, All you have to do is call And Ill be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. Youve got a friend. If the sky above you Should turn dark and full of clouds And that old north wind should begin to blow Keep your head together and call my name out loud And soon I will be knocking upon your door. You just call out my name and you know where ever I am Ill come running to see you again. Winter, spring, summer or fall All you got to do is call And Ill be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, aint it good to know that youve got a friend? People can be so cold. Theyll hurt you and desert you. Well theyll take your soul if you let them. Oh yeah, but dont you let them. You just call out my name and you know wherever I am Ill come running to see you again. Oh babe, dont you know that, Winter spring summer or fall, Hey now, all youve got to do is call. Lord, Ill be there, yes I will. Youve got a friend. Youve got a friend. Aint it good to know youve got a friend. Aint it good to know youve got a friend. Youve got a friend. (Less)

Joe @ grooveyard says I can't sing ! Man proving this guy wrong is becoming my favorite past time ! Hey I had to learn how to sing because singers got a worse ego than guitar Kings like Myself ! Hey and they say I'm hard to work with you should try Steve Perry from Journey ! I was trying to write songs for him through the cavallo crooks ! Bob was managing Him at the time and said I think I want you to play some of your songs for Steve Perry so I take the demo home off his desk to go and see what kind of ballads He is up to so I can write a couple of things for the dude to get on the same trip as the guy and it was the worst band you ever heard on the recording just completely amaturish I mean terrible ! Now I had heard from several engineers that He was a control freak deluxe and that He fired Journey and purposely went out and got lame musicians so that the stardom would be all about him ! Bob had mentioned to me "Hey kid , the musicians ain't very good on this " and was probably reluctant to give it to me but I went to his office and Pat was there and I told Him ,hey big boss man say's write some songs I got to firgure out what He (Steve Perry )wants so Pat said allright so I took the tape home to see if I can't come up with making his stuff better or revamping some tunes or write something great for the guy I mean this guy is like the greatest singer you ever heard and I mean just outstanding tone and performance even better than He had ever sounded with Journey ! Now I had the tape that my engineer friends had told me about and it was all true ! It was so wierd cuz the singing was so good I mean the best of all time and the band was so bad I mean the worst of all time ! the drummer could'nt keep time the guitar player was so weak and out of tune with the worst sound etc... ! It was a classic tape and Paul Crook says Joey the singer from anthrax loves Steve's vocals so much that I dubbed two copies 1 for me and 1 for Joey and Steve Perry comes over to meet Eddie Kramer to hire Eddie on Bob Cavallo's suggestion and Eddie tells Him "Oh yeah Johnny and the guys just love your new songs they were playing your Demo " and then all Hell brakes loose with the Guy (Steve Perry) He quits the Cavallo's ( that was a blessing in disguise for Him )He was like how many tapes have you dubbed and I was like 1 no 2 and 1 for Joey the singer from anthrax we just love your vocals cuz you know the guy sings so great plus the north meets south wierdness of the band being so bad and the singing being so good was just worth listening to for the acid trip of it all and He was freaking out and now I'm the bad guy cause Steve Perry was losing his mind on me and poor Eddie doesn't know the guy has got issues ! It was classic rock star madness like you could not believe ! Poor Kramer just trying to smooth it over you know trying to make conversation with Steve Perry and now he starts accusing me and the dub engineer of bootlegging his stuff and He wants to know who has heard the demo and how many copies and it keeps getting worse becuase you know it was 1 no 2 copies and I am thinking Man this is bad and just when I think it can't get any worse than this He starts accusing the Power trio from hell of stealing his songs or chord changes here or there and that it ain't no coincidence that we happen to be recording our album and making bootleg copies of His demo's at the same time ! I was just absolutely stunned ! I mean this is really gone south now for sure and I am completely flabbergasted ! Look @@ Yes it was wrong to make a copy for Joey belladonna and myself I can't blame Joey It was all my fault . It was such a mindfreak this wierd demo but it was out of Love for both Steve's vocals and the bad band demo that you just had to hear it ! Ha ! This whole thing with this insane rock/pop star just took on a life of it's own now ... it had gone to the sinful sick side of pop culture madness ! The guy was so completely over the top in his own wierd paranoia world of self importance ! I mean Bob Cavallo told me to write some songs for the guy , which I was more than happy to do and it was pop stuff like , Oh Sherry and now He is accusing the power trio from hell of stealing his song ideas ! I mean He really went there ?! He officially lost it ! The trio album was heavy rock speed metal and there wern't no ballads He was just a neurotic fruitcake just reaming me out for like a good 40 minutes on stealing his music and I kept every once and awhile trying to get a word in edgewise to reassure Him and He was just like using me like toilet paper , it was horrible ! He ( Steve Perry )was a little crazy in the head and that ladies and gentleman ain't no joke ! Oh sweet Jesus help that poor soul and me too , What a headtrip ~ Have Mercy ! Hey you would have loved to hear that demo too ! It was so wierd to the ear and freak showish words have not been created to ... It beggars description !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Less)
