Hundreds of "buy boats" plied the Chesapeake Bay from the early part of the 20th century up through the late 1960's. The buy boat stands alongside the skipjack, the bugeye and the log canoe as one of the Bay's indigenous working watercraft. But what is a buy boat? Essentially they were bay-going trucks that kept Bay commerce moving for a good part of the last century. They performed a multitude of hauling functions. Buy boats would visit working tongers or skipjacks at the oyster beds, buy their catch (hence the name) and haul the oysters to the packing house. They might then take on a load of bushels of oysters, clams, or crabs, depending on the season and haul them from, say Cambridge, up to Baltimore to restaurants and other packing houses. In the summer it was common to see buy boats loaded high with watermelons, cantaloupes, and other vegetables running up and down the Bay. By the 1950's the buy boats' freight hauling role on the Bay was being taken over by trucks, and many boats were abandoned, scrapped or converted for other use (many wound up as inshore fishing vessels in other parts of the country).
Peggy is one of the few authentic buy boats remaining on the Bay today. She was built in Virginia in 1925 by Harry Hudgins. She features the distinctive rounded or "fantail" stern typical of Virginia boats. She lived the life of a typical buy boat, wound up in a southern Bay fishery, but was found and restored by her present owner, a true buy boat enthusiast. She has been well restored structurally and mechanically and is cleverly outfitted as an elegant yacht suitable for extensive cruising.
