This is a performance of Liszt's Sonata in B minor, played on May 7th, 1997. The Liszt recital (More) This is a performance of Liszt's Sonata in B minor, played on May 7th, 1997. The Liszt recital was a 'project' I did for music class way back when I was still in high school, and featured this work and the Concerto in E flat (accompanied on second piano). You might notice that the instrument isn't of the same quality as the ones in my other films. Aside from those distracting mechanical keyboard noises (that sort of sound like someone knocking on wood), and pedals that moved about a half a foot with each depression, I also recall that I had to tape the keyboard lid to the piano so that it wouldn't fall and chop my fingers off! (It was a high school piano, what'd you expect?) But I guess these are the sorts of hardships that us pianists have to become accustomed to dealing with. For those who aren't acquainted with the work, it was completed in 1853, and is considered by many scholars to be Liszt's greatest achievement as a musical architect. It is a gargantuan single movement structure (spanning almost thirty minutes) that incorporates five thematic ideas (of which three appear on the very first page!) that is a rather tough pill to swallow if you're listening for the very first time (If you feel bored by the work, don't feel too bad, even Brahms fell asleep when he first heard it!). However, as with most great works of art, one's relationship with it intensifies over repeated hearings. Today it is frequently heard in concert halls around the world (becoming an almost obligatory piece to study for pianists) and has rightfully become accepted as one of the greatest masterpieces of the piano literature. Throughout its duration Liszt utilizes his 'innovative for its time' concept of thematic transformation to maintain both interest and unity. A concept which Berlioz and Alkan were concurrently was exploring in their own works (The idée fixe from the Berlioz Symphony Fantastique or Alkan's Concerto for solo piano are prime examples). Thematic transformation is a somewhat self explanatory name for the idea. He takes a theme and transforms the character of the music by changing the texture, or modulating to different keys, employing augmentation or diminution to it, amongst other things (at one point he even takes the theme that first appears at m. 8 combines it with the 'mephistopheles' theme and uses it as part of a fugal subject for a fugato with three voices. Oh, and before I forget, since I already have a video of it posted, the Scriabin ninth sonata also uses Thematic Transformation, and interestingly enough, one of the themes there (the repeated note one) is a distortion of the Liszt's 'mephistopheles' theme.
