During their whole life, a vast majority of the Madagascan farmers can't even manage to buy a zebu, despite the fact this animal is so useful to them. The cost of the beast is too high and like anywhere else, banks lend money only to the rich. Aware of this fact, Stéphane Geay devised an unusual project ten years ago. He named it the ZOB (Zebu Overseas Bank), and suggested to small French investors to invest some of their savings into the purchase of a zebu. The animal is then entrusted to a farmers' family who pays off the investment thanks to the fruits of their work accomplished by the zebu. This "silly" idea has proved to be brilliant in fact. The success of the operation even exceeded all expectations. (Less)
Madagascar National Anthem Formerly an independent kingdom, Madagascar became a French colony in 1896 but regained independence (More) Formerly an independent kingdom, Madagascar became a French colony in 1896 but regained independence in 1960. During 1992-93, free presidential and National Assembly elections were held ending 17 years of single-party rule. In 1997, in the second presidential race, Didier RATSIRAKA, the leader during the 1970s and 1980s, was returned to the presidency. The 2001 presidential election was contested between the followers of Didier RATSIRAKA and Marc RAVALOMANANA, nearly causing secession of half of the country. In April 2002, the High Constitutional Court announced RAVALOMANANA the winner. RAVALOMANANA is now in his second term following a landslide victory in the generally free and fair presidential elections of 2006.
