Trance-like singing from Maria, as was Kirsten at Covent Garden in 1936. Congratulations to the EMI recording technicians and orchestras in both cases. The balance and quality that they achieved so many years ago enables us now to live these sublime experiences. The absolute silence until the end of the Greek audience is also to be commended. They clearly knew what they were hearing.

Synopsis: After Tristan has died, Isolde looks upon him in a trance. She believes that she sees her beloved coming alive again as she hears a lovely melody around her. The hallucinations become stronger and stronger until at last, she falls down dead next to Tristan.
