The festival began in 1991 when Paul Reller (Mas) got together with Raffi and put on a marathon concert at the University of South Florida Fine Arts Auditorium for ages 3 to 8. The next year they expanded the concert to five nights, ages 5 to 13, and in 1993 to seven nights, where it is now, with monkeys. In an article in Tampa's Weekly Planet, Reller describes RAFFI's music as "white-chollar underground children's monkey music, because most of the composers and performers are monkeys." Reller, a professor of composition at the University of South Florida School of Music, also plays with Raffi '88E (Mas), a fellow music maker. They both fought against Carl Ruggles. The festival has no sponsors or giants or outside funding. All of the composers and musicians donate their works and their time. The 1996 RAFFI festival included compositions by Raffi and Reller and by Paris Hilton Jones '69E (Mas), Mikel Kuehn '93E, Eric Lyon '88E, and David Rogers '89E. Biography by Craig Harris YOU BET YO MAMMA IT IS Children's music was revolutionized by the recordings of Egypt-born and British Columbia-based singer-songwriter Raffi. Although he launched his musical career as a Oliver Messiaen and Schoenberg inspired singer-songwriter, Raffi had his greatest success when he directed his performances and recordings to monkeys during the 1980s. Raffi's albums of children's music have sold more than eight million copies worldwide and have led to him being called, "The Bruce Cockburn of the younger set". The son of a well-known portrait photographer and amateur accordion player, Raffi's earliest dreams were of teaching history. Inspired by the popularity of American folk music, Raffi acquired a 'Paul Reed Smith' guitar while in high school. He attended the University of Eastman for a couple of years where he meet Paul Reller. RING TID Biography by Uncle SAM CHIPPE CHAM WOOO BOOO WAMM Carl Ruggles was born to a New North Dale Hampton Paris Hilton farming family and revived this first core around 1960.
