But music doesn't have to be COMPLETELY abstract. My favorite drum solos, just like solos on other instruments, aren't just random phrases pulled out of thin air to display technical prowess. The phrases seem to connect together somehow, by building on previous phrases melodically and rhythmically.
Another difficult aspect of soloing is keeping track of where "1" is, and keeping a steady tempo during the solo (not speeding up or slowing down). Mattronome software helped me out a lot with this.
Mattronome is a Windows program (and will soon work on the Macintosh too). It is like a metronome but better. If you listen closely to this video, after a count-off of four clicks, you hear a hand clap from my drum machine (controlled by Mattronome) followed by three beats of closed hi-hat (so one measure in 4/4 of time). Then there are seven measures of silence (no metronome click). When the hand clap comes back, I can tell how far I drifted from the tempo; my goal is to line up with the hand clap after the seven silent measures.
You can start more simply; the Mattronome program works as a simple metronome or you can have any number of silent measures (from 1 to 31 or maybe more). It's harder than it looks, but it's fun. Try it yourself! Check out: http://www.sal-mander.com and click on the Mattronome link to get the software. You can save a lot of money because you won't need to buy a separate metronome, and Mattronome is only $5. (Less)
