Army Sgt. Brian John McLaren was pronounced dead Monday at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center where he was taken after the accident. Witnesses said he dove into the pool, apparently unaware that the water level had dropped significantly because of the year's sparse rainfall. McLaren was born Jan. 4, 1984, in Wilmington, Ohio, and enlisted in the Army in August 2002 after graduating from Blanchester High School in Blanchester, Ohio, in June that year. He underwent basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., and studied Russian at DLI. He was then assigned to Wackernheim, Germany, with the 501st Military Intelligence Battalion, then returned to DLI to study Arabic. Afterward, he was assigned to a special operations team with the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, N.C. In November, McLaren proposed to his fiancee, Ashika Dutt, of Salinas. The couple were engaged to be married Nov. 2. Family friend Anne Ferguson said McLaren, Dutt and friends had breakfast at First Awakenings in Pacific Grove on Sunday, and decided to go to the Big Sur Gorge. Ferguson described McLaren as laughing, joking and enjoying himself at breakfast, during the drive along the coast, and on their hike to the gorge. "Brian and Ashika were walking hand in hand ahead of the group, simply enjoying their time together," Ferguson said. When the group arrived at the falls, Ferguson said, Dutt said to McLaren, "Be safe, baby, the water looks shallow." "Brian turned to her with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes and kissed her on the forehead and said, 'I will, baby.' He gave her his shirt and went running to be the first one to jump. He truly had a huge smile on his face at his last moment on this Earth." He was flown by helicopter to Santa Clara after friends rescued him from the pool. McLaren suffered a broken neck from the fall, according to hospital authorities, and was an organ donor for seven recipients. In addition to his fiancee, McLaren is survived by his mother, Patricia Lynn Hair; father, John William McLaren and stepmother, Amy McLaren; a sister, Amanda Michelle McLaren; stepsisters Sally Ann Emerson, Nikki Jones and Abby Gordan; a brother, Andrew Emerson; stepbrothers David Lee Emerson, David Lee Jones and Johnny Gordon; and grandparents Jerry and Loretta Crumbacher, Donald and Sue Hair, and Sharon Steele, Juanita and John Emmick, and John William McLaren Sr., all of Ohio. A celebration of Brian John McLaren's life will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove. Funeral services will be held Tuesday in Blanchester, Ohio. The family prefers that contributions in his memory be sent to the Brian J. McLaren Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Bank of America, account number 0081469031. The scholarship will be awarded to someone chosen by his family. (On Brian's last day, he seemed to really do everything he wanted. Woke up with his baby in his arms, Ashika, and told her he loved her. After everybody got up, he took a wonderful walk with all of his friends out here, laughing and joking the whole way. Of course, Brian came back to Monterey so we had to eat at First Awakenings, which always turns into a morning of fun and fornication. He got a great laugh when Ryan fell backwards off his chair into a giant bush. The most memorable time during the day was during the walk back up to my apartment when Brian and Ashika were walking ahead of the group simply enjoying their time together. Upon arriving to the gorge, he really enjoyed the hike up there. Right before he jumped into the water, his last words were "Don't be a pussy" as he turned with a huge smile on his face. He truly had a huge smile on his face at his last moment on this earth, just the way he would have wanted it.) (Less)
