I first met (More) Darbara Dunn introduces the legendary Smokey Stover at a August 1997 Pearland Opry. I first met Smokey at the Alvin Opry in Alvin, Texas around 1996. Outgoing and friendly, and always ready for a good time Smokey makes you feel like you've known him all your life. The life of the party he is. Singer, songwriter, and radio DJ, Smokey covered a lot of ground during his lifetime. Several years back I discovered that he even knew an uncle of mine, also a musician, back in the 1950s. Smokey was born in Huntsville, TX on November 16, 1928, and was legendary in the Houston, TX area where he spend most of his career on suburban radio stations. Performing in Houston honky-tonks at the age of 16 with his band he landed his first disc jockey job at KLVL , Pasadena, Texas in 1949. He joined KRCT, Baytown, Texas a year later had Hank Williams as a guest on his radio show in 1952. the 1950s was a busy time for Stover, working at stations KBRZ, Freeport, TX, KLOS, Albuquerque, NM, KCIJ, Shreveport, LA, and WDAI, Meridian, MS. He joined KMOP, Tucson, AZ (1960-1968), then quit radio to concentrate on performing and songwriting. In 1970, Stover joined KRZE, Farmington, NM and retired from radio after three years. He did several more stations in the interim, but mostly concentrated on his songwriting and performing. I ran into him often at the little Oprys south of Houston, and at the Avoca Old Time Country Music Festivals in Iowa. The last time I saw him before he passed away of cancer in June 2005. But long before that fateful day he had a host of artists recording his songs; George Jones, Loretta Lynn and Linda Ronstadt, among others. Smokey Stover was inducted into the Country Music D J Hall of Fame in 2000 and America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame by the National Traditional Country Music Association. Smokey was one of a kind and truly missed by all of us. ...Mike Johnson, Roughshod Records This video Courtesy of the Mike Johnson Video Archives.
