She was born to Chaym Wegier, a baker, and his wife, Chaya Zygelbaum.
She has three brothers, Robert, Jacques Wegier, Jean-Isidore, and a sister, Sura.
Robert died in a concentration camp.
Jailed by the Nazis during World War II, she was released in 1943. Discovered in Paris by the wife of mogul Darryl Zanuck.
In 1952, she divorced Cavalcade, and moved into the Zanuck home.
In August 1953, she signed a contract with Zanuck, who changed her name to Bella Darvi, Darvi a combination of the first names of Zanuck and his wife, Virginia.
Best known for the role of Nefer, the seductive Babylonian courtesan, in The Egyptian. Her performance, stymied by her thick accent and a lisp, was roundly panned by the critics.
Zanuck left his wife for Darvi,... On 13 November 1960, Darvi married Claude Rouas, a restaurant waiter, in Las Vegas; the marriage was annulled less than a year later.
Darvi committed suicide in Monte Carlo by gas, but her body was not found for more than a week.
This is very loosely based on The Story of Sinuhe, which does include references to Aten but was written many centuries before the 18th dynasty.
Sets, costumes, and props from this film were bought and re-used by Cecil B. DeMille for The Ten Commandments. As the events in that story take place seventy years after those in The Egyptian, this re-use creates an unintended sense of continuity. The commentary track on the Ten Commandments DVD points out many of these re-uses. Only two actors, Mimi Gibson and John Carradine, and a handful of extras, appeared in both pictures.
The Prince Aly Khan was a consultant during filming, he was engaged to Gene Tierney.

April 3 -- Radio station KWKH of Shreveport, Louisiana airs the Louisiana Hayride for the first time.
May 15 - Billboard magazine begins a sales-based Best Selling Folk Retail Records chart, the magazine's second chart to track the popularity of country songs. The new chart complements the existing Most Played Juke Box Folk Records chart, and begins a practice of multiple charts (and possible simultaneous No. 1 songs) that will continue for the next 10 years.
July 24 — Roy Acuff announces his intent to run for governor of Tennessee. Running as the Republican candidate, he will lose to Democratic candidate Gordon Browning in the November election.

Eddy Arnold dominates the Billboard magazine charts, scoring five No. 1 songs (six, if one counts Arnold's "I'll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You In My Arms," which had been No. 1 since November 1947). Only Jimmy Wakely's "One Has My Name (the Other Has My Heart)" breaks Arnold's streak. Four other songs by Arnold also make the country charts.
